ELAIN ERSKINE'S HORRIFIC ANIMAL ABUSE IN STEWARTON: KILMARNOCK COURT HEARS DISTURBING DETAILS

Elaine Erskine, a breeder with a troubling history, was at the center of a shocking case of animal neglect that unfolded in Stewarton, East Ayrshire. Born on February 13, 1960, Erskine was previously residing at East Lodge, Craufurdland, Kilmarnock KA3, but at the time of her arrest, she was living in a caravan on Fenwick Road, Stewarton. Her living conditions and the state of her animals drew widespread condemnation after authorities uncovered the extent of her neglect.

Investigators from the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Scottish SPCA) responded to a tip-off about possible animal cruelty at Erskine’s residence. When they arrived at her property, they found the front door unresponsive, prompting them to check the back of the house. There, they discovered makeshift kennels housing ten Jack Russells and an outhouse that was in a deplorable state, completely unfit for any living creature. Peering through the patio doors, inspectors saw inside a “filthy” kitchen where two German Shepherds and a Jack Russell were standing. Other windows revealed three additional Jack Russells confined in an empty room, their floors covered in dog dirt.

Despite leaving a card requesting Erskine contact them, she failed to respond. The inspectors returned the following day, this time accompanied by a veterinarian and armed with a warrant to gain entry. Upon entering the house, they were immediately overwhelmed by a foul stench of urine and feces so intense that one inspector had to step outside to breathe fresh air and to clear her eyes. Inside, the scene was one of utter neglect: rooms filled with rubbish and faeces, dogs in a state of severe malnutrition, and animals covered in their own filth. The team found more dogs in distress, including two German Shepherds and four Jack Russells, in a pitiful condition. One of the German Shepherds was so badly affected that it was euthanized immediately, and another was put down later. A wounded Jack Russell, found at the scene, was also euthanized due to its injuries and distress.

During the court proceedings at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court, it was revealed that the animals were in a dire state, with some on the brink of death. The inspectors described the German Shepherds, named Arti and Rosie, as being covered in open sores and too weak to lift their heads. When Erskine arrived at the scene, she attempted to obstruct the inspectors’ efforts to examine the animals, trying to prevent them from inspecting the German Shepherds. She expressed shame and admitted that she knew the dogs would need to be euthanized because of their condition. The court heard that she was visibly upset when one of the German Shepherds was put down on the spot.

Further searches on March 28, 2018, uncovered additional suffering animals. The main bedroom contained two Jack Russells in cages, along with two pups in another cage. A Pomeranian and three small pups were also confined in cages within the same room. One of the dogs found had a fractured leg and skin ulcers, with bones clearly visible through the wounds. This dog was in extreme distress, emaciated, and was removed from the property immediately. The court was told that the conditions inside the house were so appalling that the investigators struggled to access certain areas, such as the kitchen, which was blocked by a mountain of rubbish.

Prosecutors highlighted the severity of the neglect, emphasizing that the dogs were suffering from starvation, injuries, and infections. The court was shown images of the animals, many of whom were unable to stand or lift their heads, covered in sores and dirt. The distress was palpable, and the authorities described the scene as one of the worst cases of animal cruelty they had encountered.

Elaine Erskine’s defense lawyer, Douglas Macphee, acknowledged her responsibility and expressed remorse. He explained that Erskine had been living in the same squalid conditions as her animals and had struggled to cope with her circumstances. She admitted to failing to provide basic necessities such as food, water, and bedding to the dogs from December 2017 through March 2018.

Initially, Erskine was sentenced to 14 weeks in prison; however, this sentence was later overturned on December 5, 2018. The sheriff, Michael Hanlon, described the case as one of the worst he had seen, emphasizing the severity of the neglect. The court also ordered her to complete 200 hours of community service, banned her from keeping animals for life, and imposed a permanent ban on her involvement in animal breeding.

Following her appeal, Erskine was released pending the outcome, which ultimately resulted in her sentence being overturned. Her case remains a stark reminder of the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of neglecting those who cannot speak for themselves.
