A 77-year-old man from Grimsby has been convicted of numerous serious sexual offences committed against children over several decades.
Edward Sherriff was found guilty at Grimsby Crown Court on Tuesday, 22 July, following a seven-day trial.
The court heard that he was responsible for the rape of a child under 13, along with four counts of sexual assault involving a child under 13, two counts of sexual assault of a child under 16, eight counts of indecent assault, three counts of gross indecency, and an exposure charge.
The investigation was initiated in 2022 after reports from three individuals who recounted prolonged sexual abuse suffered during their childhood.
During police interviews, Sherriff denied any sexual interest in children but was subsequently convicted unanimously by the jury and has been remanded into custody.
Sentencing will occur at a later date.
Detective Sergeant Chris Clarke, who led the case, stated: “Sherriff has now been found guilty of committing prolonged and deliberate sexual abuse against innocent and vulnerable children, with offences spanning from 1980 to 2022.
Over the years, he exploited their trust through manipulation, threats, and emotional abuse to keep silence.
I commend the victims for their bravery throughout this process.
Although the verdict does not erase the pain and suffering endured, it reassures that such a sick individual can no longer harm children.
I urge anyone manipulated or suspecting similar crimes to seek help and report when ready.
Thanks also to Blue Door for their vital support to victims.
We take all reports of this nature seriously, regardless of when they occurred, and will continue to pursue offenders like Sherriff.
