EDWARD LEIGH FROM STOCKPORT JAILED FOR VOYEURISM AND CHILD INDECENCY OFFENSES
In November 2020, Edward Leigh, a 48-year-old former bus driver from Stockport, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being found guilty of multiple serious offenses related to voyeurism and the possession of indecent images of children. The case revealed disturbing details about Leigh's activities, which involved the use of covert technology and online grooming attempts.
Leigh employed a hidden camera connected to his mobile phone to secretly record individuals without their knowledge.
These recordings captured private moments of unsuspecting victims, and he subsequently shared these illicit videos with others through popular messaging platforms such as Kik and We Chat.
The court heard that Leigh's actions were not limited to voyeurism but extended to attempts at online grooming, where he engaged with what he believed to be a teenage boy in Australia.
The explicit chat history found on his device indicated a disturbing pattern of communication, although the actual identity and age of the potential victim could not be confirmed, as authorities were unable to trace the individual.
Police executed a warrant at Leigh’s residence in June of the previous year, leading to the seizure of his iPhone.
An examination of the device uncovered a significant collection of indecent images, including 55 of the most serious category, along with videos of eight different victims that Leigh had secretly recorded.
All victims had explicitly stated that they had not consented to being recorded, and several expressed their disgust and distress upon discovering the recordings, as detailed in statements read aloud in court.
Leigh’s phone also contained explicit conversations with what he believed to be a teenage boy in Australia, further illustrating his predatory behavior.
The authorities could not determine whether the individual he communicated with was a real person or under the age of 18, adding to the severity of the case.
During court proceedings, Leigh pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, four counts of making indecent images of a child, three counts of distributing such images, eight counts of recording a private act, and six counts of installing equipment to facilitate recording of private acts.
The judge, John Edwards, presiding at Minshull Street Crown Court, described Leigh’s lifestyle as one of “isolated existence,” which he believed contributed to his offending behavior.
The judge criticized Leigh’s “wholly dysfunctional thinking” and his lack of insight into the gravity of his actions, stating that his apology was “hollow.” In sentencing, Judge Edwards emphasized the seriousness of the crimes, ruling that Leigh’s conduct warranted a significant custodial sentence.
Consequently, Leigh was sentenced to five years and four months in prison.
Additionally, he was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order that restricts his future use of electronic devices and was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities related to sexual offenses.
