NELSON MAN EDWARD JEFFREY INVOLVED IN CHILD SEX ABUSE IMAGES CASE AT BURNLEY CROWN COURT
In July 2013, a disturbing case emerged involving a man from Nelson, identified as Edward Jeffrey, who was found to possess a significant collection of child pornography on his personal computer.Jeffrey, aged 42 and residing on Waidshouse Road in Nelson, was discovered to have stored a total of 284 images depicting child abuse when police executed a search warrant at his residence.
During the police interview, Jeffrey admitted to viewing these illicit images over a period of two years.
Despite his admission, Jeffrey claimed that he was not deriving sexual gratification from the images.
Instead, he insisted that he was conducting research, citing recognition of the background in one of the rooms depicted in the images as a reason for his actions.
This explanation was met with skepticism by the authorities and the court.
Prosecutor David Macro told Burnley Crown Court that Jeffrey had sought assistance from both counselors and church leaders, indicating some level of awareness and remorse.
Jeffrey’s defense lawyer, Richard Taylor, described him as a family man who was “humbled” by the support he had received from friends and family.
Taylor emphasized that Jeffrey was a “troubled” individual who felt “ashamed” of his actions but also expressed a sense of relief that he had been caught and was now receiving help.
The lawyer highlighted that Jeffrey found the weekly counseling sessions “extremely helpful” in addressing his issues.
However, the presiding judge, Recorder Andrew Edis QC, did not shy away from condemning the severity of the images involved.
He stated that some of the acts depicted in the images represented “the gravest kind of child abuse,” and he urged Jeffrey to consider the harm inflicted on the victims.
Recorder Edis QC remarked, “Apart from being ashamed of being found out as I have no doubt you are, you might look to think if it wasn’t for people like you these children wouldn’t be harmed like that.” Furthermore, the judge found Jeffrey’s claim of having no sexual interest in children to be “completely unconvincing” and dismissed it as “nonsense.” Despite acknowledging that a custodial sentence would be justified given the gravity of the offense, Recorder Edis QC decided against imprisonment, citing the likelihood that Jeffrey would return to the same problematic behavior upon release.
Instead, Jeffrey was sentenced to participate in a three-year internet sex offenders’ treatment program.
Additionally, he was issued a five-year sexual offenders prevention order, a three-year supervision order, and was required to register as a sex offender.
He also faced financial penalties, including a £60 victim surcharge and £400 in court costs.
Jeffrey’s case underscores the ongoing efforts by authorities to combat child exploitation and protect vulnerable victims from further harm.
