EDWARD CALLANAN BRUTALIZES WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN GLASGOW: SHOCKING CRIME SPREE REVEALED
In a disturbing series of violent and indecent assaults spanning over a decade, Edward Callanan, a 52-year-old man from Glasgow, has been sentenced to three years in prison at the High Court in Edinburgh. The court heard harrowing details of his brutal treatment of women and children, which took place at various addresses across Glasgow, including the east end and south side of the city.
Callanan's reign of violence and abuse reportedly extended over a 12-year period, during which he inflicted physical and emotional harm on multiple victims.
Among the most distressing incidents was an attack on a woman who was holding a seven-month-old baby; during this assault, Callanan kicked the woman, causing her to drop the child.
Additionally, a pregnant woman was punched by him, further illustrating the severity of his violence.
Two of his victims were subjected to indecent assaults, adding a layer of sexual misconduct to his crimes.
Following his conviction, Callanan, who resides on Balbeggie Street in Glasgow, was also ordered to register as a sex offender, reflecting the gravity of his offenses.
The court's decision underscores the serious nature of his crimes and the impact on his victims.
Earlier in August 2014, Callanan was found guilty of abusing former partners and children, with the court hearing evidence of assaults and indecency committed at properties in Glasgow’s east end and south side between 1986 and 1998.
The High Court in Glasgow was told that he attacked a woman while she was pregnant and subjected two young girls to excessive punishment, including physical abuse such as being locked in rooms for making noise or being beaten with a belt.
During the trial, the jury learned that Callanan’s violent behavior began with repeated slaps against his first victim.
His violence escalated after he entered into a relationship with another woman, whom he eventually moved in with.
The woman, now aged 49, recounted how Callanan initially appeared to be a jovial, carefree individual, describing him as a “Jack the Lad” and “Happy as Larry.” However, her perception changed dramatically when she moved into his home in Glasgow’s east end, where he reportedly flew into a rage while she was preparing dinner.
She described an incident where he hurled a plate at her, claiming he disliked his curry being mixed with rice.
The court also heard that Callanan punched the pregnant woman in the stomach, an act that demonstrated his violent tendencies during her pregnancy.
His attacks extended to a third victim, a young girl, who testified that she became accustomed to his frequent assaults over time.
The abuse included excessive punishment, such as being locked in a room for making noise or being beaten with a belt.
Although Callanan faced accusations of raping one of the women and one of the girls, the jury returned verdicts of not proven in those cases.
Nonetheless, the court’s findings confirmed a pattern of violent and abusive behavior that caused significant suffering to his victims.
Callanan’s actions have left a lasting impact on those affected, and his sentencing reflects the serious concern of the justice system in Glasgow and beyond.
