Melksham Rapist
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Melksham and the surrounding areas, Edward Caldwell, a man aged 36, has been found guilty of multiple heinous offences involving young children. Caldwell, who was previously convicted and is currently serving an 18-year prison sentence, faced additional charges after a new victim came forward, revealing further details of his predatory behavior.

His latest trial took place at Winchester Crown Court, where a jury deliberated and ultimately convicted Caldwell on three counts of sexual abuse. These offences occurred between 2013 and 2014, during which time his young victim was only eight and nine years old. The court heard evidence that painted a disturbing picture of Caldwell’s actions during those years. The judge ordered that Caldwell’s new sentences run concurrently with his existing prison term, meaning he will serve the combined sentences simultaneously, further extending his time behind bars.

Back in March 2018, Caldwell’s criminal activities had already led to a significant prison sentence. At that time, he was convicted of raping and sexually assaulting a young child. Caldwell, then 34 and residing in Melksham, had moved to Weymouth after the incident. His crimes included raping a child under the age of 13, assaulting a child under 13, inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and possessing indecent images of children. These offences were prosecuted at Swindon Crown Court, which sentenced him to 18 and a half years in prison.

The police investigation that led to Caldwell’s arrest was initiated after officers uncovered a cache of indecent images. In November 2016, specialist officers traced and apprehended Caldwell following his online activities, which involved downloading and sharing illicit material. A search of his computer and tablet revealed a staggering collection of approximately 3,700 images and videos categorized from A to C, indicating a wide range of indecent content involving minors.

Further compounding his criminal record, Caldwell’s victim had confided in a family member about the abuse shortly before his arrest. This disclosure prompted the family member to contact law enforcement authorities, leading to the investigation and subsequent charges. Caldwell’s case continues to serve as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to protect vulnerable children from predators like him.
