DYLAN WILLIAMSON AND KIARA-LEE GALLACHER'S HORRIFIC SEX OFFENSES IN EDINBURGH: COURT REJECTS APPEALS
In a significant legal development in Edinburgh, a young mother named Kiara-Lee Gallacher, aged 24, has seen her attempt to overturn her conviction for a serious sexual offense fail in the Court of Criminal Appeal.Gallacher, who was sentenced to two and a half years in prison, was convicted alongside her accomplice, Dylan Williamson, 22, following a high-profile trial at the High Court in Edinburgh.
Williamson, a known serial offender, received a six-year prison term for his involvement in a brutal rape committed during the same incident with Gallacher, as well as for raping another woman in an attack that occurred just weeks prior.
The presiding judge, Lord Braid, emphasized the severity of Williamson’s crimes and ordered that he be placed under supervision for three years after his release, a measure aimed at safeguarding the public from potential re-offending.
Despite the conviction, both Gallacher and Williamson sought to challenge their verdicts at the Court of Criminal Appeal in Edinburgh.
Their legal representatives argued that their clients had been subjected to a miscarriage of justice, claiming that the evidence was insufficient to support the guilty verdicts.
However, after careful consideration, the panel of three senior judges—Lord Carloway, Lord Pentland, and Lord Woolman—concluded that the evidence presented at trial was compelling enough for the jury to have reasonably found both defendants guilty.
Lord Carloway, speaking on behalf of the court, stated, “The court is convinced that the conviction appeals be refused,” effectively dismissing the appeals and upholding the original verdicts.
Earlier in the year, during the trial proceedings, Lord Braid also informed Gallacher that she would be registered on the Sex Offenders' Register for a period of ten years following her sentence, reflecting the gravity of her involvement in the crimes.
Details of the offenses reveal a disturbing pattern of violence and exploitation.
Williamson, who previously resided on Pennywell Road in Edinburgh, first attacked a woman on November 18, 2018, at a flat in the Muirhouse area.
The woman, a stranger to Williamson, initially consented to some sexual activity but clearly expressed her unwillingness to engage in intercourse.
Despite her objections, Williamson assaulted her and ultimately raped her.
Less than a month later, on December 30, 2018, Williamson and Gallacher targeted a second woman at a flat in the Lochend area of Edinburgh.
During this assault, the victim was subjected to molestation, verbal sexual remarks, and her lower clothing was removed before she was raped.
The victim testified in court that Gallacher had actively encouraged Williamson during the attack, adding to the distress caused.
Judge Lord Braid described the impact of the crimes on the victims as “extremely distressing,” and emphasized that the effects of Gallacher’s participation in the rape were “profound” for the victim.
Both defendants, who reside on Dunkirk Road in Edinburgh, initially denied the charges of rape but were convicted after a trial.
Williamson faced two counts of rape, both of which he was found guilty of, while Gallacher was convicted of a single charge of rape involving Williamson.
Williamson’s defense lawyer, Brian McConnachie QC, challenged the severity of his client’s sentence, arguing that it was disproportionately harsh compared to similar cases.
The appeal court agreed and decided to quash the requirement for Williamson to be supervised for three years, with Lord Carloway stating that the supervision condition would be removed.
The court also indicated that it would issue a detailed written explanation of its decision in due course, providing further clarity on the ruling.
