DYLON MCKENZIE CAUGHT WITH ILLEGAL CHILD IMAGES IN SOUTH SHIELDS
In September 2018, a disturbing case emerged involving a university student from South Shields who was found in possession of highly illegal and disturbing images involving children as young as five years old.The case was brought before Newcastle Crown Court, where the defendant, Dylan McKenzie, faced serious charges related to the possession and creation of indecent images of minors.
According to court reports, police officers executed a search warrant at McKenzie's residence in South Shields last October.
During the search, they discovered a total of 298 illicit images stored across an iPad and a computer hard drive.
These images included not only photographs of children aged between five and eleven but also prohibited sexual cartoons depicting minors, which are considered highly illegal and morally reprehensible.
The court heard that McKenzie, aged 20 at the time, admitted that his consumption of legal pornography had spiraled into a criminal obsession.
He explained that he had attempted to cease his viewing habits but found himself repeatedly returning to these illegal images.
His actions and the possession of such material raised serious concerns about the potential for further harm and the link between viewing such images and the actual abuse of children.
Judge Simon Batiste addressed McKenzie directly, emphasizing the gravity of the offense.
He stated, “The children involved were extremely young, five to 11 years old.
While you and others may have thought this is a victimless crime, it’s not, because the abuse of children only takes place, in many cases, because there’s a market of people wanting to look at such images.
So viewing these images is a direct cause of the abuse taking place.” McKenzie pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including possession of prohibited images of children and three counts of making indecent images of minors.
The court was informed that some of the images fell into the most serious categories of their type, although most were classified at lower levels of severity.
In sentencing, Judge Batiste imposed a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, coupled with requirements for rehabilitation.
Additionally, McKenzie is mandated to register as a sex offender and adhere to a sexual harm prevention order for the next seven years.
The judge acknowledged that McKenzie is of previously good character, has family support, is currently attending university, and has moved on from the issues that led to his illegal downloads.
This case highlights the ongoing concerns surrounding the possession and distribution of illegal images of children, and the serious legal consequences faced by those involved in such crimes, especially when they are young adults like Dylan McKenzie from South Shields.
