DOUGLAS MILLER SHAMES RUGBY WITH SEXUAL ABUSE OF TEENAGE GIRLS

In August 2018, a disturbing case emerged involving Douglas Miller, a man with deep ties to Rugby, who exploited his position within the local theatre community to prey on vulnerable teenage girls over a period spanning nearly a decade.

Miller, aged 57 and residing at Alexandra Court in Rugby, was ultimately convicted and sentenced for a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against young girls associated with Rugby Theatre.

Throughout the investigation, it was revealed that Miller, a long-standing volunteer at Rugby Theatre, had used his backstage role and involvement in numerous productions to groom and manipulate at least three teenage girls, all aged between 14 and 15 at the time.

Prosecutor Rebecca Austin detailed how Miller would often lure these girls with gifts and alcohol, creating an environment conducive to abuse.

The offences reportedly took place from the mid-1990s through the early 2000s, with Miller at the ages of 34 to 44 during the period of his predatory behavior.

One of the victims, a 14-year-old girl, recalled attending a theatre 'taster session' where she first encountered Miller.

She remembered seeing him in the theatre bar, where he offered her a drink before taking her onto the roof of the theatre.

There, Miller began to kiss and touch her, despite her clear indications that she was not interested.

Her mother later observed a change in her daughter's behavior following this incident, and the girl herself later described the experience as having a profound and negative impact on her mental health, although she did not initially disclose what had happened.

Another victim, also aged 14, recounted how Miller would often sit with the teenage girls and supply them with alcohol.

She was taken to his flat on Regent Street, where he exposed himself and coerced her into performing a sexual act.

These disturbing revelations came to light during police investigations, which uncovered multiple accounts of Miller’s inappropriate conduct.

Witnesses and other individuals associated with Rugby Theatre confirmed that they were aware of Miller’s inappropriate interest in the girls, but no immediate action was taken at the time.

Further evidence emerged involving a third girl, aged 15, who stated that Miller had taken her onto the theatre roof, where he hugged and touched her.

On one occasion, he invited her to his home, where he again supplied alcohol and engaged in sexual activity with her while she was intoxicated.

Police investigations uncovered a significant communication record: 148 phone calls between Miller and this girl over a five-week period, indicating a pattern of grooming and manipulation.

Despite these findings, Miller denied any sexual contact, and the girl chose not to disclose her experiences at the time, which delayed further action.

In 2015, Miller was arrested, and during the search of his belongings, officers discovered a DVD containing indecent images of another girl, aged between 16 and 18 at the time the images were taken.

Although possession of such images was not illegal at the time they were created, a subsequent change in law rendered his continued possession unlawful.

Prosecutor Miss Austin emphasized that Miller’s actions represented a gross breach of trust, exploiting his role within the theatre community and the vulnerability of young girls for his own gratification.

Judge Peter Cooke sentenced Miller to a total of eight years and four months in prison.

He also ordered Miller to register as a sex offender for life and imposed a sexual harm prevention order.

The order restricts him from entering into relationships with individuals who have children under 16 without informing his offender manager.

In his remarks, the judge condemned Miller’s conduct, stating, “You were plainly very attracted sexually to a number of young girls who came to the theatre, and you repeatedly abused your position to have your own way with those girls.

You preyed on their youthfulness and vulnerability.

On any view that is a gross breach of the trust not only of the girls but also of their parents.

You took away what should have been happy memories of those years, and fun in putting on those productions, by the way you slaked your lust on them.”
