DOUGLAS GALLACHER CAUGHT WITH CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN PAISLEY AND GALLOWHILL
In July 2016, a disturbing case emerged involving Douglas Gallacher, a 28-year-old man from Paisley, who was found to be in possession of an alarming collection of nearly 3,000 images and videos depicting the sexual abuse of young children, some as young as three years old.The investigation was initiated after police public protection officers received a credible tip-off, leading to a detailed search of Gallacher’s residence in Gallowhill, Paisley.
Authorities executed a search warrant at his parents’ home on Bargarron Drive early in the morning of November 18, 2015.
During the operation, Gallacher was present along with his parents and grandmother.
The police uncovered a disturbing cache of digital material stored on two external hard disks and a laptop computer, all located within his bedroom.
The evidence was collected for forensic analysis, revealing a horrifying collection of child sexual abuse images and videos.
Gallacher, who was described as bespectacled, initially attempted to downplay the severity of his actions.
When confronted by officers, he claimed, “I am the one most at risk from downloading stuff like this because I download movies and I don’t what else is coming with it.” He also attempted to justify his behavior by asserting, “I have been against child abuse since I was old enough to know what it was,” despite the evidence suggesting otherwise.
The police investigation, led by fiscal Keri Marshall, confirmed that the search yielded a Toshiba external hard disk, a SATA hard disk, and an Acer laptop.
A preliminary examination of the devices revealed the presence of numerous images of young children, some of the most severe category of abuse.
The officers questioned Gallacher’s father about ownership of the devices, to which he responded that his son was the sole owner and user, and that no other household members had accessed the equipment.
Following his arrest, Gallacher was taken to Greenock Police Station for questioning.
He chose to remain silent during the interview, offering no comments.
The forensic analysis of his computer equipment uncovered a total of 1,956 still images and 702 video files, many of which depicted the most severe forms of child abuse.
Of particular concern, 413 images were classified as ‘Category A,’ indicating the most serious level of abuse, involving children as young as three years old.
Further investigation by the Cyber Crime Unit revealed that peer-to-peer file sharing applications had been installed on Gallacher’s laptop, facilitating the distribution and sharing of such illegal material.
The analysis confirmed that the hard disks had been in contact with these file-sharing programs, raising additional concerns about the potential dissemination of the abuse images.
During the court proceedings, Gallacher’s defense lawyer, Paul Lynch, requested that his client’s bail conditions be maintained, specifically prohibiting him from accessing the internet or having contact with children, pending the preparation of background reports for sentencing.
The court, presided over by Sheriff Seith Ireland, ordered Gallacher to be placed on the Sexual Offenders Register for five years.
The sheriff warned that Gallacher faced the possibility of imprisonment when he returns to court for sentencing.
Sheriff Ireland emphasized the seriousness of the charges, stating, “There is no doubt that these are serious matters and you should be aware that all options including a custodial sentence are open to the court.” He also indicated that Gallacher would be referred to the Pathways Project, a program involving individuals convicted of sexual offenses, and that his registration period could be extended at sentencing.
Gallacher was released on bail under strict conditions and is scheduled to appear again in court in September for sentencing, where further penalties may be imposed based on the full extent of the evidence and his actions.
