MAN JAILED FOR ONLINE CHILD SEXUAL OFFENCES AND POSSESSION OF ILLEGAL IMAGES
A man has been sentenced to prison after his involvement in storing thousands of indecent images and videos of children across 21 devices, as well as engaging in sexual communication with minors over a period of nearly two decades.Forensic investigations revealed over 19,000 images and 628 videos related to child exploitation.
Douglas Bowyer, aged 67 and residing on Chester Way in Boston, appeared before Lincolnshire Crown Court on Friday, July 9, where he received an eight-year prison term.
The investigation into this complex case started on October 26, 2020, following information received from a regional unit dedicated to locating, protecting, and assisting victims of child sexual abuse.
Initially, a user operating under the username ‘Boy4GirlUK1’ engaged in sexualised conversations with someone believed to be a 13-year-old girl.
This individual also encouraged the minor to perform sexual acts.
During the exchanges, ‘Boy4GirlUK1’ claimed to be a 19-year-old male from Lincolnshire named Dan.
The profile picture associated with this account depicted a blonde-haired young male.
Additionally, the user shared the Snapchat contact ‘danny_boi5620’ with the minor.
The conversation then moved to Snapchat, where the individual again engaged in sexualised dialogue and urged the child to masturbate.
Digital forensics experts were tasked with identifying the person operating the account.
On November 10, 2020, police detained Douglas Bowyer, then 61 years old, at his home in Boston.
Bowyer had no prior police record; however, during questioning, he fully admitted to the allegations.
He disclosed that he had been talking to children online using platforms like Chat Avenue for some time, which sometimes led to contact on Snapchat.
Bowyer confessed to impersonating a 19-year-old named Danny and claimed to have communicated with approximately 50 children, describing himself as ‘a stereotypical dirty old man’.
Following his arrest, authorities seized numerous electronic devices, including computer towers, laptops, mobile phones, hard drives, and disks for forensic analysis.
Due to the large volume of items 49 in total a phased forensic approach was implemented.
Forensic work uncovered the extent of his depravity, requiring the officer in charge of the case to view and grade over a million images, 19,000 images and 628 videos of which were classified as follows.
- Category A – 2,923 images, 256 videos.
- Category B – 2,326 images, 79 videos.
- Category C – 12,956 images, 279 videos.
- Prohibited – 798 images.
- Extreme – 1 image, 14 videos.
Alongside the thousands of inappropriate images found across various devices, investigators uncovered hours of recorded live chats and online interactions.
It quickly became clear that Bowyer had engaged in sexualised conversations with numerous underage girls online over an extended period.
Regarding two of these girls, aged 13 and 15 at the time, police identified that Bowyer sustained online ‘relationships’ with them for several years.
One of the children even revealed during a chat that they had been undergoing counselling for possible clinical depression, revealing the depth of Bowyer’s exploitation.
His targeting extended beyond just age and vulnerability; he also exploited those dealing with mental health issues.
Investigation efforts aimed to identify all children depicted in the images, but evidence suggests Bowyer had been communicating with minors globally over many years, with initial contacts dating back to 2002.
Despite thorough inquiries, only three victims have been officially recognised.
All of them are now adults.
At a plea trial hearing in April 2026, Bowyer pleaded guilty to the following offences.
- Two counts of engaging in sexual communication with a child.
- Attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.
- Three counts of coursing or inciting a girl aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity – penetration.
- Attempting to course or incite a girl aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity – penetration.
- Six counts of making indecent photograph / pseudo-photograph of a child.
- Possessing a prohibited image of a child.
- Possessing extreme pornographic images / images portraying rape.
- Possessing extreme pornographic image / images portraying an act of intercourse / oral sex with a dead / alive animal.
As part of his sentence, Bowyer was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for life and was issued a Sexual Harm Protection Order.
