DERRY SNEDDON FROM LOCHGELLY FACES JAIL AFTER CHILD AND ANIMAL IMAGES SCANDAL IN FIFE

In January 2021, a serious case involving a young man from Lochgelly has come to light, highlighting the ongoing issues surrounding the possession of indecent images and the challenges of rehabilitation for offenders. Derry Sneddon, aged 18, appeared before Dundee Sheriff Court for a review of his sentencing, which was initially imposed due to his failure to fully cooperate with social work interventions aimed at addressing his troubling behaviour.

Sneddon’s case drew significant attention as it involved disturbing material, including indecent images of children and animals. The court heard that the offences took place over a span of several years, specifically between April 5, 2015, and September 24, 2019. The evidence indicated that Sneddon had been found in possession of these illicit images at an address in Letham, a location within the Fife region. Furthermore, he had either taken or permitted the taking of an indecent image of a child at the same residence, adding to the gravity of his offences.

Adding to the severity of his crimes, Sneddon was also found to possess an image depicting bestiality, which was also linked to the same address and occurred within the same timeframe, from May 1, 2018, to September 24, 2019. These offences, committed while Sneddon was under the age of 18, prompted the court to impose a court order requiring him to meet regularly with social workers to address his behaviour and prevent further offending.

However, the court was informed that Sneddon’s engagement with these social work appointments was minimal and inconsistent. Ross Donnelly, representing Sneddon, admitted to Sheriff Tom Hughes that if it were not for his client’s young age, he would have little to say in his defence. Donnelly described Sneddon as “aimless” and lacking purpose in life, emphasizing that the young man’s attitude towards the court-ordered interventions was concerning.

Mr. Donnelly explained, “I made it clear to him at the time this order was an alternative to custody. While he complies with the appointments, there seems to be a lack of focus in them. If he was an older man, I would have very little to say but I think that it is a case where his age is a factor. He doesn’t seem to have much purpose in life and just lives day-to-day. I have made it clear to him he is in a very precarious position.”

Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Sheriff Hughes decided to give Sneddon another opportunity to engage more actively with social services. A further review was scheduled for April 28, during which the sheriff emphasized the importance of genuine participation and warned Sneddon of the potential consequences of continued non-compliance. The sheriff stated, “You have to understand how serious a situation you are in. You could face a very lengthy period in an institution. I want to see greater involvement in your attendance and participation. It is your choice now.”

As the case continues to unfold, the focus remains on whether Sneddon will take the necessary steps towards rehabilitation or face more severe penalties for his actions and lack of cooperation.
