DERMOT STORAN FROM LONDON JAILED FOR GROOMING PLOT AT KING'S CROSS
In December 2016, Dermot Storan, a resident of London, was sentenced to prison after being convicted of attempting to groom a minor for sexual activity. The incident unfolded when Storan engaged in an online conversation with what he believed was a 14-year-old boy, but in reality, he was communicating with a decoy operated by the online protection team known as Public Justice PHL.
Storan initiated contact through the internet, exchanging numerous sexually explicit messages with the decoy.
His intent was clear: he arranged to meet the supposed minor in person at King's Cross on December 24, 2015.
On the day of the meeting, Storan arrived by pushbike, expecting to meet a young boy for what he believed would be a sexual encounter.
However, upon arrival, he was met with the realization that the individual he had been communicating with was part of an undercover operation designed to catch online predators.
The decoy was part of a team dedicated to protecting children from grooming and exploitation.
Storan was visibly shocked and angered by the deception, and he attempted to flee the scene.
His escape was thwarted when the team seized his bike to prevent his departure.
Following the incident, Storan was brought to court on Monday, October 31, 2016, where he faced a two-day trial.
The charges against him included grooming and attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity.
Evidence was presented by Public Justice PHL, which played a crucial role in the case.
The jury, after deliberation, returned a verdict of guilty by a majority of 10-2.
The court proceedings culminated on December 14 at Blackfriars Crown Court, where the presiding judge sentenced Storan to 18 months in prison.
During the sentencing, Storan broke down in the dock, crying as he was led away to serve his sentence.
In addition to his prison term, Storan was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and was mandated to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years.
The case highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement and child protection agencies to combat online grooming and safeguard vulnerable minors from exploitation.
