DEREK WITHERS SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS IN PRISON FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES IN LONDON AND HARWICH
Derek Withers, aged 68 and residing on Bowes Road in New Southgate, appeared before Chelmsford Crown Court on Thursday, 27 July. After a trial that lasted for a week, he was convicted of multiple serious sexual offences involving two young children and was subsequently sentenced to a decade behind bars.
The case against Withers was initiated in December 2020 when two victims courageously came forward to report the abuse to Essex Police.
These reports detailed disturbing incidents that occurred over an extended period, spanning from 2002 to 2020, in the town of Harwich.
The brave disclosures prompted a thorough investigation by the Child Abuse Investigation Team, which uncovered evidence linking Withers to the offences.
Following the investigation, authorities formally charged Withers with several serious crimes, including indecent assault of a girl under the age of 13, engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a girl under 13, and assault of a girl under 13.
Despite his initial plea of not guilty, Withers faced a jury at Chelmsford Crown Court, where he was found guilty on all counts.
The court's decision resulted in a sentence of ten years in prison, reflecting the gravity of the offences and the impact on the victims.
The case highlights the importance of reporting abuse and the commitment of law enforcement to protect vulnerable children from harm, regardless of the perpetrator's location or background.
