DEREK O'ROURKE'S SHOCKING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CRIME IN MAIDSTONE, KENT
A man identified as Derek O'Rourke, aged 57, has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of possessing indecent images of children. The investigation into his activities revealed that he had been using free Wi-Fi hotspots available in shops around Maidstone town centre, located in Kent, to access and download illegal material.
O'Rourke's criminal behavior came to light when authorities traced his online activity.
He was arrested at his residence in Fairmeadow, Maidstone, on March 13, 2018.
During a thorough search of his home, police recovered his mobile phone.
Forensic analysis of the device uncovered a disturbing collection of images and videos depicting child abuse.
In total, 29 such files were found, with 15 classified as the most severe category of abuse.
During police interviews, O'Rourke initially denied that the phone belonged to him.
However, further investigation revealed that the SIM card inserted into the device was registered under his name, establishing his ownership beyond doubt.
This evidence led to charges against him for possessing four counts of indecent photographs or pseudo-images of children.
O'Rourke's criminal record includes previous convictions for similar offenses.
As a result, he was subject to a license that imposed strict conditions aimed at preventing further offenses.
Unfortunately, he breached these conditions, which resulted in his recall to prison.
At Maidstone Crown Court, O'Rourke pleaded guilty to all charges.
On Thursday, he was sentenced to a term of one year and eight months in prison.
Additionally, he remains under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which is designed to restrict his access to certain online content and monitor his activities to prevent future offenses.
Detective Constable Wes Marston commented on the case, emphasizing the seriousness of O'Rourke's actions.
He stated, “O'Rourke is a repeat offender who has previously been given every opportunity to engage in rehabilitation and was subject to strict court conditions to deter his ability to access illegal images of children.
Despite this, he has been unable to prevent himself from reoffending.
He continues to demonstrate a determination to access illegal images with no understanding of the gravity of his actions and without remorse.
O'Rourke also appears incapable of accepting that the material he continues to access results from real children suffering appalling abuse, and now he must again face the consequences of his actions.”
