A man from Workington has pleaded guilty to charges of harassment after threatening violence on multiple occasions towards a woman. The incident, which spanned several months, has brought the case before Carlisle Crown Court, where Derek Crammond, aged 30, appeared to face the charges.

According to court records, Crammond admitted to a single offence of harassment, which involved putting the woman in a state of fear of violence. The charge specifies that on at least two separate occasions, between August 1, 2020, and April 24 of this year, he made threats of violence against her. These repeated threats caused significant distress and concern for her safety, prompting legal action.

The court proceedings revealed that Crammond had been held in custody for nearly six months. Given that the maximum sentence for this particular offence is six months, his legal representative requested that the court proceed directly to sentencing. However, Recorder Eric Lamb decided that more information was necessary before determining the appropriate punishment, stating, “The court needs to consider the future.”

During the hearing, prosecutor Kim Whittlestone emphasized the ongoing fear experienced by the complainant, stating, “She is fearful there will be future contact from him to her.” This concern about potential further harassment influenced the court’s decision to adjourn the case for a pre-sentence report to be prepared by the probation service.

As it stands, Crammond is scheduled to be sentenced on October 21. In the meantime, he has been granted conditional bail under strict conditions. These include residing at Sycamore Court in Workington, refraining from any form of contact—either direct or indirect—with the woman, and avoiding a specific address linked to the case.

Overall, the case highlights ongoing issues of harassment and the importance of legal measures to protect victims from future harm, with the court carefully considering the appropriate sentence based on the circumstances and the defendant’s history.
