DEREK BENNETTS OF PENZANCE RECEIVES SUSPENDED SENTENCE AFTER VIEWING CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN TRURO

In April 2016, a Penzance man named Derek Andrew George Bennetts received a suspended prison sentence after admitting to possessing and creating indecent images of children. The 31-year-old unemployed man was found to have viewed images featuring children as young as five, which he claimed aroused him, Truro magistrates heard.
Bennetts, of Godolphin Road, pleaded guilty to making 126 indecent movie images and photographs of children between December 2014 and May 2015 in Penzance. He also admitted that on February 15 of the previous year, he possessed extreme pornographic images.
Having no prior convictions, Bennetts’s activities came to light after police searched his home in February 2015, following ongoing intelligence efforts related to the sharing and distribution of indecent images of children. Alison May from the Crown Prosecution Service explained that Bennetts had pointed to his laptop during the search, stating, "That’s the one you need," indicating it contained child pornography.
Ms. May detailed the nature of the images found, which included erotic dancing and genital exposure. Bennetts acknowledged that he had accessed, searched for, and viewed indecent images of children aged five to 18, demonstrating a sexual interest in females within that age range. He admitted to using both adult pornography and child abuse images over the past two or three years, and had also viewed extreme sexually explicit material.
As part of the sentence, Bennetts was given a one-year prison term, suspended for two years. He was also subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, required to register as a sex offender for ten years, and ordered to pay £185 in costs and charges.
Additionally, in March 2016, Bennetts pleaded guilty at Truro Magistrates’ Court to making 126 indecent images of children and possessing four extreme pornographic images. CPS representative Alison May noted that ongoing investigations related to sharing of such images led to police examining Bennetts’ laptop, which was seized and examined after his compliance during arrest.
