Harlow Domestic Abuser
Denzel Barzey, aged 30, of Pittmans Field, Harlow, has been sentenced to 22 months in jail after a pattern of violent behavior towards his former partner. He admitted to two counts of actual bodily harm and assault by beating, which resulted in his ex-partner suffering from short-term memory loss, nightmares, and head injuries. The court heard that he was prone to "outbursts of unpleasant violence" and had previously served time for controlling behavior but failed to learn from it. The incident involved Barzey becoming angry when his partner laughed at her phone, during which he threw a deodorant can at her, missed, and then shoved her onto the bed. On January 20, 2024, he punched her three times, beat her leg, causing bruising, and later punched her three to four times on the back of her head after going through her phone. The woman attended Princess Alexandra Hospital for her injuries and provided a victim impact statement stating she now lives in fear of him and suffers from anxiety, nightmares, and memory issues. Despite previously being jailed for coercive and controlling behavior, Barzey resumed violent outbursts, and the judge noted that he had "learnt nothing" from his past sentences. As mitigation, it was mentioned that he was out of work and had been engaging in courses in prison aimed at self-improvement. The court emphasized his ongoing tendency towards violence, and he was consequently sentenced to 22 months in prison.
