DENNIS POWLEY OF GRIMSBY SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN SHOCKING CASE

In March 2021, a disturbing case emerged involving Dennis Powley, a 72-year-old man from Yarrow Road in Grimsby, who was found guilty of heinous crimes against a young girl.

The case revealed a pattern of abuse that spanned several years, beginning when the victim was just seven years old.

Powley's actions came to light after the girl confided in her parents about the abuse she had endured at his hands.

Confronted with this revelation, Powley admitted to her mother that he had sexually abused her from the age of seven.

In a series of deeply troubling emails, he disclosed personal details about his life, including his wife leaving him for a woman and ongoing health issues, which he claimed contributed to his offending behavior.

During these email exchanges, Powley expressed feelings of loneliness and a desire for love, suggesting that the young girl had filled a void in his life.

He stated, “Why does this happen with her and no one else?

It may be a combination of events in my life that took me over the edge of whatever it is.

I was craving someone and I wanted to be loved again.

Perhaps she filled a part in my life.

Perhaps this is where I tripped, I cannot remember wanting to upset her.

I am ashamed of my actions causing these problems.” It was only years later that authorities arrested Powley, following a police investigation prompted by concerns over his contact with other young girls and his proximity to a primary school in Grimsby.

Prosecutor Jeremy Evans outlined the severity of the case at Grimsby Crown Court, revealing that Powley faced six counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual assault.

The abuse began when the girl was just seven and continued for approximately five years.

Mr.

Evans explained that the victim, now a young woman, first disclosed her experiences when she was between 14 and 15 years old.

The court heard that Powley, who was in a position of trust, had manipulated her and exploited her innocence.

His misconduct was further revealed when he was found to have been in contact with another young girl and living near a Grimsby primary school, which raised suspicions and led to police intervention.

Further details emerged about Powley's ongoing harassment, including instances where he taunted the victim by asking her over the phone what she was wearing.

In 2009, her mother exchanged emails with Powley, during which he made partial admissions of his offending, sending messages from his work email and attempting to justify his actions.

The victim described feeling powerless throughout the ordeal but expressed relief that she would not have to relive her trauma in court.

She also shared her journey of recovery, noting her struggles with anxiety and depression, but also her current happiness as a married woman looking forward to starting a family.

Judge Ahmed Nadim delivered a stern sentence, condemning Powley for manipulating the trust placed in him and for the emotional and psychological harm caused to his victim.

The judge stated, “He manipulated situations to touch his victim who trusted him.” Powley was sentenced to four years and two months in prison and was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely.

The judge emphasized the gravity of Powley's actions, highlighting that the victim was unaware at the time that his conduct was wrong and that he had exploited her innocence in a calculated manner.

He praised her resilience and hoped that the sentence would bring some closure to her long-standing suffering.
