CHISWICK CHOIRMASTER DENIS JOHN COCHRANE SENTENCED FOR ABUSE OF PUPILS
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the West London community, Denis John Cochrane, a 52-year-old choirmaster from Chiswick, was sentenced to seven years in prison last week after being convicted of multiple serious charges related to the sexual abuse of young boys.The court proceedings revealed a disturbing pattern of misconduct spanning several years, involving a 12-year-old boy whom Cochrane had assaulted on seven separate occasions over a four-year period.
Additionally, Cochrane faced charges of importuning another pupil for immoral purposes and theft, specifically of another boy’s pants.
These allegations were brought to light during the trial held at the Old Bailey on March 26th, where Cochrane maintained his innocence, denying all charges.
Despite his denial, the jury found him guilty on all counts.
The court heard that the victims were part of an inner circle of students, often referred to as Cochrane’s ‘boys,’ who were treated preferentially by the choirmaster.
This favoritism created a toxic environment that facilitated the abuse, with the victims feeling both intimidated and manipulated.
During the trial, Cochrane admitted to having a sexual relationship with a former pupil after the young man had completed his university studies.
The court was informed that the sexual encounters took place in the bedroom of Cochrane’s residence in Chiswick.
The room was notably designed to resemble the state room of a luxury liner, a reflection of Cochrane’s fascination with Titanic memorabilia, which he reportedly collected avidly.
Following his conviction, Cochrane was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, a measure intended to monitor and prevent further offenses.
The sentencing judge emphasized the gravity of the crimes and the impact on the victims, who showed remarkable courage in coming forward.
DS Colin Smith of the Child Protection Team expressed his thoughts on the case, stating, “We hope this verdict brings some closure to the victims.
We would like to highlight our admiration of the victims who only came forward to prevent this happening to others.” The case has left a lasting scar on the community, prompting ongoing discussions about safeguarding and the importance of vigilance in educational and extracurricular environments.
