DAVID WEBB'S SHOCKING SEXUAL ABUSE IN ST AUSTELL: PENSIONER SENTENCED FOR DECADES-OLD CRIMES
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of St Austell, a pensioner named David Webb has been sentenced to prison for sexually abusing a young girl during the 1980s.The disturbing revelations came to light after the victim, now an adult, bravely reported the abuse to authorities in 2013, leading to Webb's eventual arrest and prosecution.
Webb, who was living in the Tywardreath area of St Austell at the time of the offences, admitted to three counts of sexual offences against the girl, who was underage at the time.
The offences spanned from 1985 to 1987, a period during which Webb engaged in inappropriate and criminal conduct that has had a lasting impact on the victim’s life.
During the proceedings at Truro Crown Court last Friday, the Crown Prosecution Service, represented by David Evans, detailed the allegations.
The victim recounted how Webb had made her touch him sexually on multiple occasions, actions that she described as deeply traumatic.
Mr Evans highlighted the emotional toll on the victim, stating that she felt she was the “disgusting one,” a reflection of the profound shame and confusion she experienced during those years.
Webb, who was unrepresented at the hearing, admitted to the offences during police interviews.
He expressed remorse and accepted responsibility, stating that he believed he deserved whatever punishment was handed down.
In his own words, Webb said, “I am so sorry for what I have done and I accept whatever happens next.” His address was listed as “no formal abode,” indicating a lack of fixed residence at the time of sentencing.
Legal representatives for Webb, including Chris Spencer, acknowledged that Webb regretted his actions.
However, they also noted that the abuse had occurred on at least four separate occasions, underscoring the severity and repeated nature of the offences.
Judge Simon Carr, presiding over the case, emphasized the gravity of Webb’s crimes.
He pointed out that the offences had targeted a very young child and had caused irreparable damage to her happiness and well-being.
The judge remarked, “What you did over those few months was to destroy a significant amount of her happiness and life forever.
She accepts it is not a nightmare that had ended as yet for her.
You, on the other hand, have been able to get on untroubled.” Judge Carr also acknowledged Webb’s apparent remorse when he was finally arrested, which influenced the sentencing decision.
Webb was sentenced to three and a half years in prison, a punishment deemed appropriate given the seriousness of the offences and their long-lasting impact on the victim’s life.
