YORK SEX OFFENDER DAVID STANSFIELD SENTENCED FOR CHILD INDECENT IMAGES
In a case that has shocked the community of York, David Stansfield, a man with no prior criminal record, was formally sentenced after police uncovered a disturbing collection of indecent images and videos involving children.The investigation began when authorities executed a search warrant at Stansfield’s residence in Stirrup Close, York, on December 31, 2010.
During the raid, law enforcement officials seized multiple pieces of computer equipment, which later revealed a troubling cache of illicit material.
Analysis of the seized devices uncovered a total of 84 images classified as the lowest level of severity, indicating they were less extreme but still illegal.
However, the investigation also uncovered seven other images and a video that were categorized as hardcore, with one of the images being of the highest severity.
These findings painted a disturbing picture of the extent of Stansfield’s possession of illegal content.
Prosecutor Alan Mitcheson, speaking at the sentencing hearing held at York Crown Court, described the discovery as “just the tip of the iceberg.” He explained that forensic experts later identified additional indecent images of children that had been deliberately deleted from Stansfield’s computer files, suggesting an attempt to conceal the material.
The forensic examination took over a year due to the complexity and volume of data involved.
During police interviews conducted approximately a year after his arrest, Stansfield claimed that he had purchased the computers second-hand at an auction, which he argued explained the presence of the illicit images.
Nonetheless, he ultimately admitted to charges of making and possessing indecent images of a child, as well as possessing extreme pornographic material.
Stansfield’s case also revealed personal consequences.
His lawyer, Andrew Semple, stated that following the charges, Stansfield’s girlfriend had left him, and his professional future was uncertain.
Semple explained that Stansfield had developed an addiction to adult pornography, which had escalated to the downloading of indecent images and videos involving children.
The emotional toll of the case and the shame associated with his actions led Stansfield to seek medical treatment for anxiety and stress, especially as he endured a two-year wait for his court hearing.
In delivering the sentence, Judge Stephen Ashurst, the Recorder of York, acknowledged Stansfield’s previous good character and his reputation as a hard-working individual.
Recognizing these factors, the judge opted against immediate imprisonment.
Instead, Stansfield was sentenced to a three-year community order, which includes mandatory participation in a sex offender’s rehabilitation program.
Additionally, he was subjected to a five-year restriction on internet usage and was placed on the sex offenders’ register, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities to protect the community from potential harm.
