Durham Sexual Abuser
David Spence, a man described by authorities as a predatory paedophile, has been convicted of multiple indecent assault crimes committed against young children during the 1980s and 1990s in the Spennymoor area of Durham. These heinous offences, which occurred decades ago, have had a profound and lasting impact on his victims, who are now adults struggling with mental health issues as a direct consequence of Spence’s actions.

The details of his crimes only came to light after investigations resuscitated the case, leading to a second police inquiry into his conduct. Despite initial denials and attempts to dismiss the allegations, Spence, aged 67 at the time of sentencing, eventually changed his plea to guilty on the day his trial was scheduled to begin. His persistence in denying the accusations had delayed justice for many years, but ultimately, his admission of guilt ensured that he faced the consequences in a court of law.

During the trial, one of the victims delivered a heartfelt impact statement, revealing the deep psychological scars inflicted upon them. They explained that they have suffered from persistent low self-esteem and recurrent night-terrors throughout their adulthood, issues directly linked to Spence’s abuse. The victim also disclosed experiencing full-blown panic attacks regularly and living with ongoing paranoia, highlighting the severe trauma they continue to endure.

As a result of his convictions, David Spence received a prison sentence of ten and a half years. Additionally, he was handed a 12-month extended licence, which requires ongoing supervision and compliance with specific conditions. To further prevent any possibility of contact with victims or the community, a restraining order was issued against him, restricting his movements until further notice.

Moreover, Spence was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which will remain in effect until further legal determination. He has also been placed on the sex offenders' register, mandating him to adhere to certain restrictions and reporting requirements for the foreseeable future. The combination of these measures underscores the seriousness of his crimes and the lasting efforts of the justice system to protect the public and deter similar behaviour.
