DAVID SMITH FROM GLASGOW SENTENCED FOR HIGH-RISK RAPE AND ATTEMPTED MURDER IN EDINBURGH
In a harrowing case that has shocked the city of Glasgow and the wider Scottish community, David Smith, a 32-year-old man from Maryhill, was handed a severe and lifelong restriction order following his conviction for a series of heinous crimes.The incidents, which culminated in a brutal attack on a woman in a Glasgow flat, resulted in a dramatic and desperate act of self-preservation by the victim, who leapt from a fourth-floor window to escape her attacker.
The assault took place on February 1, 2018, within a residential flat in Glasgow.
The woman, aged 29 at the time, was subjected to a three-month campaign of relentless abuse and sexual violence at the hands of Smith.
The culmination of this torment was a violent attack that pushed her to the brink of death.
During the assault, Smith's rage was ignited by a perceived slight—believing a stranger had smiled at her during a visit to Glasgow’s West End.
This perceived insult triggered a violent outburst, during which Smith threatened her life repeatedly.
According to court reports, Smith held a pair of hedge cutters to her face, threatening to kill her with chilling intensity.
He chased her through the flat, forcing her to seek refuge in a bathroom.
In a terrifying escalation, Smith then thrust a blade through the closed door, narrowly missing her.
Fearing for her life, the woman made a desperate decision to jump from the window, falling onto the concrete below.
The fall caused severe injuries, including six broken ribs, collapsed lungs, a fractured skull, a shattered breastbone, and a serious leg injury.
The court heard that Smith’s violent behavior extended beyond this incident.
He was also found guilty of subjecting a second woman to rape and abuse between 2011 and 2015, highlighting a pattern of predatory behavior.
The judge, Lord Kinclaven, sentenced Smith at the High Court in Edinburgh to 14 offences, including rape and attempted murder.
Recognizing the high risk he poses to the public, the court imposed an Order for Lifelong Restriction, a measure that effectively ensures he remains under supervision indefinitely.
During the sentencing, Lord Kinclaven emphasized the findings of an experienced psychiatrist who concluded that Smith clearly meets the criteria for being classified as a high-risk offender.
The judge stated that Smith must serve a minimum of five years in prison before any consideration of parole, but made it clear that this does not guarantee release at that time.
Smith will only be released when parole authorities determine that he no longer poses a threat to society and that continued confinement is unnecessary for public safety.
Following his sentencing, Smith was also ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely.
