Brunell – Hull Child Sexual Abuser
In a somber turn of events, David Sinclair, known as Sinclair-Brunell, met a tragic end just three months after being released from incarceration. The 55-year-old was discovered dead in his flat located on Newland Avenue in Hull on June 8, 2018, having taken a lethal overdose of drugs. This heartbreaking incident was confirmed during an inquest held at Hull Coroners Court on Thursday.
According to the findings, Sinclair-Brunell had been released from prison in March 2018 after serving an 18-month sentence for the distribution of indecent images of children. His criminal history was well-documented, and his release marked a brief period of freedom before his death. The police were called to his residence when they forced entry into the flat and found his body, which was lying undisturbed at the time.
An unsettling detail emerged during the inquest: a suicide note was discovered pinned to the front door of his home. The note was addressed to his mother and included a quote from the television series Doctor Who, stating: “It is the end…But the moment is prepared for.” This poignant message underscored Sinclair-Brunell’s apparent intent to end his life.
Further insights into his mental health were revealed during the proceedings. Sinclair-Brunell, born Christopher Howard Stone, had a long history of mental health struggles, including anxiety and depression, which he had battled since childhood. It was disclosed that he had been sexually abused as a child, a trauma that contributed to his ongoing mental health issues.
Throughout his life, Sinclair-Brunell had expressed his despair publicly. In the 1990s, he sent various letters and cassette recordings to family members, explicitly stating his desire to “end it all.” His attempts at self-harm were not limited to words; he once traveled to London and threw himself in front of an underground train, narrowly surviving the impact.
Medical records from his general practitioner revealed a history of drug overdoses, including incidents in 1979 and 1999. Diagnosed with mental behavioral problems in 1985 and later with Asperger’s syndrome in 2017, Sinclair-Brunell struggled to come to terms with his condition. His diagnosis of Asperger’s added another layer to his complex mental health profile, which he found difficult to manage.
His criminal record was marked by multiple arrests related to child pornography. The first arrest occurred in the late 1990s, resulting in a two-year prison sentence. He was later incarcerated again in 2016 for an 18-month term for similar offenses involving the distribution of indecent images of children.
Pathologist Dr. Lazlo Karsai concluded that the cause of death was drug poisoning, specifically an overdose of paracetamol. The area coroner, Rosemary Baxter, officially recorded the death as a suicide. During her remarks, she stated, “David Sinclair-Brunell, otherwise known as Christopher Howard Stone, died on June 8, 2018, at his home address in Newland Avenue. I find he was somewhat depressed in the weeks leading to his death and find that his many and sad problems overcame him in the end and that he intended to die. I find that it was a pre-planned act and that he intended to take the paracetamol to take his own life. I therefore conclude that the death of David Sinclair-Brunell is to be recorded as suicide.”
