YORK SCHOOL GOVERNOR DAVID SCOTT JAILED FOR SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP WITH PUPIL IN YORK
In October 2015, a disturbing case emerged involving David Scott, a school governor from York, who was sentenced to a one-year prison term after engaging in a sexual relationship with a pupil. The court heard that Scott, aged 33, had developed a romantic interest in a girl at the school, which eventually led to a series of inappropriate encounters.
According to court proceedings, Scott, who served as a student support worker and was elected by colleagues as a staff governor, began to pursue the girl after she developed a crush on him.
The relationship escalated over time, with Scott kissing and cuddling the girl, and eventually sleeping with her after her 16th birthday.
The court was informed that their interactions included intimate moments in Scott’s car, where they would share kisses before driving to his marital home for sexual activity.
Additionally, Scott engaged in sexual acts with her in a hotel, further compounding the severity of his misconduct.
Prosecutor Abigail Langford told York Crown Court that Scott, who was part of a school committee, had ignored the girl’s attempts to contact him via social media.
The relationship only intensified after Scott’s marriage began to break down, which appeared to have contributed to his decision to pursue the affair.
Despite the gravity of his actions, neither the girl nor her mother wished for Scott to be imprisoned, and his defense team presented testimonials from former pupils, parents, and staff members attesting to his character.
However, Judge Rodney Jameson QC emphasized the importance of accountability and the need to uphold standards of conduct for individuals in positions of trust.
He stated that Scott’s imprisonment was necessary to send a clear message about the dangers of temptation and the responsibilities held by those working with young people.
Scott, who admitted to engaging in sexual activity with a girl while in a position of trust, was also ordered to refrain from contacting her and will be required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years.
His sentencing underscores the serious consequences faced by individuals who abuse their roles of authority, especially in educational settings, and highlights the ongoing need for vigilance and safeguarding in schools across York.
