DAVID RUSSELL FROM ESSEX SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AFTER TRAVELING 250 MILES TO ABUSE TEEN IN BOLTON HOTEL
In August 2019, a disturbing case emerged involving a notorious sex offender from Essex who traveled nearly 250 miles with the intent to commit sexual abuse against a young girl. The individual, identified as David Russell, was ultimately apprehended in Bolton, where he had booked a hotel room as part of a sinister plan to exploit a 13-year-old girl.
Russell, aged 60, was taken into custody by officers from Greater Manchester Police during a raid at the Bolton hotel.
The arrest was the culmination of weeks of covert investigations, during which Russell had been communicating online with what he believed was the girl’s mother.
In reality, he was engaging with undercover officers from the North East Regional Special Operations Unit (NERSOU).
It was revealed that Russell had been plotting the abuse for several weeks, exchanging a series of online messages that indicated his intent to carry out the assault.
His plan was to meet the girl at the hotel, where he intended to commit the sexual offences.
The investigation uncovered that Russell had traveled from his residence in Essex specifically for this purpose, demonstrating a disturbing level of premeditation and determination.
Following his arrest, Russell was brought before Bolton Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to 19 counts of sexual offences on July 24.
The court heard that he had no fixed address at the time of his arrest.
His guilty plea led to a sentencing of nine years in prison, accompanied by an extended license period of four additional years, reflecting the severity of his crimes.
Detective Sergeant Scott Urwin of NERSOU commented on the case, emphasizing the danger posed by Russell.
“David Russell is a dangerous paedophile who repeatedly targeted vulnerable young girls,” he stated.
“He was a prolific offender who believed he would never be caught, but I am relieved that he is now behind bars where he can no longer pose a threat to anyone.” Sergeant Urwin further explained that Russell’s criminal activities extended beyond grooming young girls.
He had also targeted mothers in an attempt to gain access to their children, believing he could manipulate them into assisting with his heinous plans.
The police force continues to educate young people and parents about the dangers of the internet, urging children not to communicate with strangers online and to be cautious about sharing personal information or engaging in sexual conversations.
Prior to his arrest in Bolton, Russell was under investigation by both Essex and Sussex Police.
Authorities had already seized multiple electronic devices from him, discovering a collection of indecent images.
Although he was released under investigation while these devices were examined, he was re-arrested after being caught sending sexually explicit messages to girls as young as 11 years old.
This case underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat online grooming and sexual exploitation, especially involving vulnerable minors.
