Brixton Sexual Abuser
In a case that has shocked the local community, David Rogers, a man residing on Combermere Road in Brixton, was sentenced to prison for the indecent assault of a nine-year-old boy from a family he had befriended. The incident, which took place between June and August of 1996, involved Rogers engaging in inappropriate and illegal acts with the young boy on multiple occasions.

Rogers, aged 39 at the time of sentencing, was convicted of four separate assaults against the Pinner boy. The court heard that he had persuaded the child to perform sexual acts on him while they were on a sofa bed at the boy’s family home. During the trial, Rogers admitted to sleeping naked in the same bed as the boy but denied any assault had occurred. Despite his denial, the evidence presented was sufficient for a conviction.

Judge Myrella Cohen addressed the court, condemning Rogers’ actions in strong terms. She stated, “He was already a problem child and what you did was totally, totally, inexcusable. No one will condemn you these days for your homosexual orientation providing your partner is a man of mature age, a consenting adult, not a nine-year-old boy.” The judge emphasized that there was no evidence of threats or violence used to coerce the child, noting that on some occasions, the boy voluntarily entered Rogers’ room and bed, while on others, he awoke to find himself in that situation.

Rogers was sentenced to a total of five years in prison, with two years for two of the assaults and an additional three years for the more serious incidents. The sentences are to run concurrently, and half of the total term has been suspended. During this period, Rogers will be under strict police supervision, and upon release, his name will be added to the police register of sexual offenders.

Following the sentencing, Judge Cohen expressed her concern for the victim and his family, remarking, “I was very concerned about the boy and the family. The family knew he Rogers had homosexual tendencies but let the boy sleep with him.”

Tracey Torbet, representing the police Harrow child protection team, commented on the case, saying, “We are pleased he has received a custodial sentence and hope that will give some comfort to the victim and his family.” The case has left a lasting impact on the community, highlighting the importance of vigilance and safeguarding children from potential predators.
