DAVID POMARENSKI SHOCKING CRIME IN CAMBRIDGESHIRE: TEACHER ON SEX OFFENDERS REGISTER AFTER CHILD IMAGE SCANDAL

In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Cambridgeshire, it has emerged that David Pomarenski, a former teacher at Neale-Wade Academy, was convicted of possessing indecent images of children and subsequently placed on the sex offenders register for a decade.

The details of this case have only recently come to light, revealing a troubling oversight by the school authorities that failed to inform students, parents, staff, or even most of the governing body about the gravity of the situation.

According to court records, David Kurt Pomarenski, aged 36 at the time, appeared at Cambridge Crown Court last July, where he admitted to the charges.

The court sentenced him to eight months in prison, suspended for two years, after he pleaded guilty to the possession of indecent images of minors.

His arrest followed an investigation that uncovered the illicit material stored on his personal computer.

Prior to his court appearance, Pomarenski had been suspended from his teaching duties and resigned from his position at Neale-Wade Academy, where he had been employed since 2003.

The circumstances surrounding his departure from the school only became publicly known after a whistleblower contacted local authorities and media outlets, revealing that the school had kept the incident largely under wraps.

The whistleblower expressed outrage over what they perceived as a lack of transparency and accountability, stating, “In this day and age, with all the stories that have come out about irresponsible institutions failing to protect children, it astounds me that Neale-Wade seems to have done nothing.” They further added, “I feel so awful about the whole thing and I can’t understand why no-one has done anything about this.

I’m not looking for a witch hunt of the offender, although the thought of him makes me sick; rather I’m just so angry at the school.” The revelation of Pomarenski’s secret came to light in autumn 2013 when his wife, concerned about her own malfunctioning computer, borrowed her husband's device.

During her browsing, she discovered folders containing hundreds of disturbing images, which she found deeply unsettling.

Shocked and distressed, she reported her findings to the police, leading to her husband's arrest.

Following this, she left the family home, overwhelmed by the situation.

In November 2013, Pomarenski was suspended from his teaching role at Neale-Wade Academy and resigned before the court proceedings.

The school’s principal, Jason Wing, stated that the institution had adhered to proper procedures, although only a limited number of governors were informed about the case.

It was only recently that Councillor Andrew Pugh, the current chairman of the governing body, learned of the incident.

On a Wednesday evening, he convened a governors’ meeting to discuss the matter, with Principal Wing also attending after canceling other commitments.

Despite the school’s efforts to manage the situation internally, questions remain about the adequacy of their response.

The Neale-Wade Academy, although an independent academy outside much of Cambridgeshire County Council’s direct jurisdiction, sought guidance from the local authority’s senior press officer.

On the same day, Simon Cobby, the press officer for the Active Learning Trust that oversees the school, issued a statement defending the school’s actions.

The statement, attributed to Clive Bush, the trust’s chief executive, claimed that “Jason Wing followed all the correct procedures and made the right decisions in this case.” Mr.

Bush emphasized that the offenses occurred off school premises, using Pomarenski’s personal computer, and did not involve any current or former students.

He also pointed out that Pomarenski had resigned before the court case and was no longer employed by the school.

The statement further asserted that all recruitment procedures had been properly followed when hiring Pomarenski, and that the school updates its child protection policies biennially.

The trust maintains a robust system for students to disclose concerns confidentially, and police advice was followed at all times.

Nonetheless, Cambridgeshire Police could not confirm what specific guidance was provided to the school but did verify the sentence handed down to Pomarenski.

The community’s concern is palpable, especially among students and parents who feel they were kept in the dark.

A whistleblower, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed frustration, saying, “He was a young and popular teacher.

Pomarenski used to brag about the extra money he earned from tutoring students privately.

Just a few weeks ago, on the ‘Rate My Teacher’ website, a student asked where he was and said they missed him.” The whistleblower also criticized the lack of transparency, stating, “The courts have dealt with him regarding the images on his home computer, but I’ve been waiting since July last year to hear if there’s been any further investigation at the school.

The police haven’t said anything, and the school haven’t said anything.

Given the access this man had, I find it astounding that parents weren’t told what happened and weren’t given the chance to discuss it with their children.” Adding to the community’s distress, the whistleblower shared that on the ‘Rate My Teacher’ website, there are three entries about Pomarenski.

The earliest, from 2008, described him as “a legend.

He is sooooo funny and his way of teaching is brilliant.

He is really laid back and yet he can still control the class, even though sometimes he just rambles on and doesn’t know what to say, but that just makes him who he is.” In 2011, another student wrote, “he was my English teacher in year 7 and is my favourite teacher.” However, a recent comment from February of this year lamented, “Where are you?

You’ve literally disappeared.

We miss you.” As the community grapples with the implications of this case, questions about safeguarding and transparency remain at the forefront.

The full extent of Pomarenski’s actions and the school’s response continue to be scrutinized, highlighting the ongoing concern for the safety and well-being of students in Cambridgeshire.
