DAVID PICK AND SHOCKING CHILD SEX OFFENDER SCANDAL IN SUNDERLAND
A notorious sex offender from Sunderland has once again fallen under the scrutiny of vigilant online groups after attempting to engage in predatory behavior towards a child, this time resulting in a criminal conviction and severe sentencing.David Pick, a 63-year-old resident of Derwent Street in Easington Lane, Sunderland, had previously been caught engaging in illegal online behavior with a minor.
His past conviction includes similar offences from 2018, and he had been subject to a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) issued in that year.
Despite these legal restrictions, Pick returned to old habits, attempting to contact a young girl masquerading as an 18-year-old named Charlotte.
Initially, the online interaction seemed innocuous but soon revealed a disturbing truth when the profile claimed to be only 13 years old.
Undeterred by the child's real age, Pick escalated the conversation by sending sexual messages through social media platforms, which later continued via WhatsApp.
He explicitly asked for explicit images and made suggestive remarks such as, "I bet you would like to be having sex with me," and, "let me see you in the shower with nothing on." His messages included two images of his genitals, further evidencing his inappropriate intentions.
During the course of the communications, Pick discussed traveling from Sunderland to Preston, which he believed was where the young girl resided.
This indicated a clear intent to meet the minor in person, highlighting the danger and seriousness of his actions.
The confrontation was ultimately initiated by members of a paedophile hunting group known as Secrets and Lies Confronted.
These vigilantes, working to curb online child exploitation, successfully identified Pick and confronted him at his Sunderland home.
The group was accompanied by law enforcement authorities, who responded promptly after the arrest.
Further investigation revealed that Pick had violated the 2018 sexual harm prevention order by deleting most of the messages he had exchanged with Charlotte, an act which broke the restrictions set out by the court.
This breach was considered a serious aggravating factor during his sentencing.
In court, Judge Newcastle Crown Court heard of Pick’s extensive criminal history, which includes 47 previous convictions.
Most notably, he had committed similar offenses in 2018 and had breached the SHPO again in 2019 by deleting internet records.
These repeated violations underscored a pattern of behavior that posed a consistent threat to children.
Pick admitted to attempting sexual communication with a child and breaching the sexual harm prevention order.
As a result, he was sentenced to 20 months in prison.
Additionally, the court imposed a new, indefinite SHPO, restricting his contact with minors further.
He was also ordered to register as a sex offender for the next ten years.
Martin Scarborough, representing Pick, highlighted his client’s ongoing health issues, both physical and mental, which could complicate his imprisonment.
Nonetheless, the court’s decision underscores the serious stance taken against individuals who seek to exploit young children, emphasizing the importance of vigilant enforcement and community safety.
