CAMBRIDGESHIRE CHILD SEX OFFENDER DAVID PEARCE JAILED

A convicted child sex offender from Cambridgeshire, known for posing as a caretaker to exploit young victims, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

David Pearce, aged 70 and residing in March, admitted to seven sexual offence charges at Snaresbrook Crown Court on May 6 and received his sentence on July 3 at the same court.

In 1990, Pearce approached a group of four children at a Barking lido in east London, pretending to search for lost keys while impersonating a caretaker.

He lured the children into a changing area, compelled them to remove their clothing, and committed inappropriate acts under the guise of locating the keys.

The youngest victim was only eight years old.

Following the incident, the children promptly reported the abuse to police, facilitating the collection of statements and forensic evidence.

Officers established a crime scene cordon, which prevented contamination.

Semen found on a wooden bench within the changing cubicle yielded a DNA profile that was uploaded to a database but did not produce a match.

Further investigations included taking one of the children to a local gym for an identification attempt, but no suspect was identified at that time, and the case was stored away pending new evidence.

In 2019, Pearce was detained for voyeurism, and the DNA collected matched the profile from the 1990 lido incident, with odds of one in a billion.

This breakthrough prompted detectives to review similar cases, revealing a 1996 incident where a 13-year-old girl was coerced into shrubbery in a Barking park and assaulted under similar pretenses involving a lost key.

The victim confirmed Pearce as her attacker during an identification parade.

Corroborating evidence included Pearce’s known residence in the area in 1990 and his ownership of a food truck near the park in 1996.

These findings enabled prosecutors to formally charge him.

Detective Constable Tony Anionwu highlighted Pearce’s manipulative tactics, noting the lasting harm inflicted on victims and expressing gratitude for their resilience.

He also emphasized the department’s commitment to justice, citing a significant increase in arrests related to historical sexual offences over recent years.

DNA expert Bridget March noted the importance of forensic science in building cases, stating that technological advances were instrumental in linking Pearce to the crimes.

On May 6, Pearce denied additional charges, including four counts of indecent assault and attempts to commit acts of indecency involving children in the 1990s.

The court elected to keep these charges open while he was convicted on other counts.
