Warning: This profile contains details that may be upsetting to some readers.A video showing a five-year-old being raped and a collection of disturbing images depicting abuse of children, horses, and dogs were shared by a truck driver from Caerphilly.
David Owen, aged 41, revealed that his initial intent was to seek a partner for swinging, but his online exploits eventually spiralled into fantasies involving the rape of infants.
According to prosecutor Alex Greenwood at Cardiff Crown Court, police raided Owen’s residence at 5:02 am on December 20, 2022, and found him with his then-partner.
When asked about his internet activities, Owen admitted to possessing pictures of bestiality with a horse, asserting that these images did not involve children.
During the investigation, authorities seized his iPhone and discovered 24 Category A indecent images of children the most serious level along with 19 in Category B, 35 in Category C, and 43 prohibited non-photographic images.
He also had 383 extreme images depicting animal abuse, including a sadistic photo of a person engaging in oral sex with a dog.
Police established that the children in the images were as young as six months old.
A video was also found, sent by Owen to an acquaintance, which depicted a child in apparent distress being raped.
His online searches included phrases like “paedo lives matter” and “young teens,” and his username on a chat platform was “Paedo for kids, babies and toddlers.” Evidence showed he discussed the rape of a child he knew.
The court was informed that Owen attempted to hide these images on his phone, but was unsuccessful.
Owen, who lives on Bryn Rhedyn in Caerphilly, admitted to distributing an indecent image and possessing five different categories of indecent, extreme, and prohibited images.
He was previously unconvicted.
His attorney, Ben Walters, stated that Owen used the internet to seek comfort and a partner initially, but admitted that around two years ago, he started talking about child abuse, which he now regrets.
His lawyer said Owen was unaware of the victim’s identity in each picture but has since reflected on his behaviour and gained understanding.
The defence requested a suspended sentence, noting Owen’s ongoing attempts to rehabilitate himself and his continued employment as a truck driver, despite his marriage ending.
Judge Carl Harrison responded to the severity of the case, highlighting the trauma experienced by the children involved, most under 10 years old.
As a result, he sentenced Owen to a little over two years in prison, with half to be served in custody.
Owen will also face a ten-year order to prevent future harm and must notify authorities of his address.
After serving his sentence, he is obliged to pay a £228 victim services surcharge.
