DAVID OLIVER SCOUT LEADER FROM BOURNEMOUTH SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULTS AT BUTCHERS COPPICE
In a case that has shocked the local community, David Oliver, a 51-year-old former scout leader from Bournemouth, has been sentenced after being found guilty of multiple sexual assaults against a teenage girl. The offences occurred during the late 1990s while Oliver was actively involved in guiding young scouts at the Butchers Coppice Scout Camp, a well-known location in Bournemouth.
Oliver, residing at Coombe Gardens in Bournemouth, faced a five-day trial at Bournemouth Crown Court.
The court heard that he was convicted of six counts of indecent assault, a serious charge that underscores the gravity of his misconduct.
Following his conviction, he was sentenced to two years in prison, but the sentence was suspended, meaning he will not serve time unless he commits further offences within the suspension period.
In addition to the suspended sentence, Oliver was ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years.
The court proceedings revealed that during his time as a scout leader, he exploited his position of trust to prey on a vulnerable young girl under the age of 16.
The assaults took place in various locations, including a scout office, the grounds of the camp, and on one occasion, inside his car while en route to a camp in the New Forest.
Detective Constable Jo Shewbridge commented on the case, emphasizing the betrayal of trust involved: “Oliver used and abused his position of trust in the scouting movement to sexually assault his young victim.
I wish to praise the bravery of his victim to come forward and report the offences.” Her statement highlights the importance of victims having the courage to speak out against abuse, especially when it involves trusted community figures.
The case has brought to light the dangers that can lurk behind seemingly wholesome community activities and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals.
The community and authorities continue to emphasize the need for vigilance and support for victims of such heinous crimes.
