DAVID MILLIGAN FROM EDINBURGH SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULTS AT EDINBURGH ROYAL INFIRMARY
A man identified as David Milligan, aged 21, has been handed down a nearly four-year prison sentence after committing two separate sexual assaults on women within the grounds of Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.The incidents, which occurred within a short span of time, have shocked the local community and prompted a thorough investigation by authorities.
In the first incident, which took place in February, Milligan attempted to forcibly rape a woman on the hospital premises.
Fortunately, his assault was interrupted when a passer-by heard the victim's screams and intervened, preventing further harm.
Less than 24 hours prior to this attack, Milligan had already molested another woman on the same hospital grounds while she was smoking.
These disturbing acts highlight a pattern of predatory behavior that has now been brought to justice.
Milligan had previously admitted to charges of attempted rape and sexual assault, which played a significant role in his conviction.
Crucial evidence, including DNA samples and a pink rucksack found at the scene, contributed to the police's case against him.
The evidence was instrumental in linking him to both assaults and securing his conviction.
The case was heard at the High Court in Glasgow, where Lord Mulholland sentenced Milligan to three years and nine months in prison.
The judge also ordered that upon his release, Milligan will be subject to a two-year period of supervised release, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his behavior.
During the sentencing, Lord Mulholland emphasized the gravity of Milligan's actions, stating, "You pled guilty to attacking two women who were strangers to you.
In the second assault, you attempted to violently rape a woman.
If a member of the public had not been passing, you would have succeeded.
By your actions, you are a danger to women." Milligan's legal representative, Niall McCluskey, expressed that his client was tearful when discussing his crimes and claimed that he was unsure of what had come over him during the incidents.
This emotional response was noted during the court proceedings.
