DAVID MCMULLEN'S BRUTAL ATTACK IN GLASGOW: TODDLER'S LIFE HANGS IN THE BALANCE IN CAMBUSLANG

In December 2016, a horrifying incident unfolded in Cambuslang, Glasgow, that would leave a two-year-old boy fighting for his life and would eventually lead to the conviction of David McMullen, a man with a background in martial arts.

McMullen, aged 35 and residing in Provanmill, Glasgow, was found guilty of inflicting severe internal injuries on the young child, injuries so grave that they included a split colon and intestine, which could have resulted in the child's death if not promptly treated.

On the day of the attack, McMullen was caring for the boy at his home in Cambuslang while the child's mother was away at work.

During this time, McMullen called her in a panic, claiming that her son was unwell and was experiencing a chilling coldness.

The mother, alarmed by the distressing call, hurried home to find her son in a critical state.

She described her shock and concern, recalling that her son’s stomach felt hard and that his lips were turning blue, signs of a serious medical emergency.

Upon arrival, she immediately took her son to the hospital, where medical professionals discovered bruising on his stomach.

The urgency of the situation was clear, and surgeons quickly decided that the child required immediate surgery.

Consultant surgeon Nicola Brindley testified that the boy was gravely ill, emphasising that he was in a life-threatening condition and could have died if not treated swiftly.

The medical team later informed the mother and McMullen that the injuries appeared to be non-accidental, with the surgeon explicitly stating, “I am telling you someone has done this to your child.” Despite the medical evidence and the severity of the injuries, the child's mother refused to believe that her son had been deliberately harmed.

During the trial, she was questioned about her suspicions regarding McMullen’s involvement.

Her responses indicated that she had no suspicion of any wrongdoing on his part, asserting that she trusted him because he had previously looked after her son without incident.

She firmly stated, “If I had any concerns, I would not have left him.” McMullen, a former chef with training in Muay Thai fighting, was convicted of causing massive blunt force trauma to the child through means that remain unknown.

The court heard that the injuries inflicted were so severe that they could have been fatal.

The judge, Lord Armstrong, sentenced McMullen to eight years and seven months in prison, highlighting the vulnerability of the child due to his age and the betrayal of trust involved.

The judge also noted that McMullen continued to deny responsibility and showed no remorse or regret for his actions.

In addition to the internal injuries, the court was informed that the boy had sustained a facial injury just days before the incident, which McMullen claimed was accidental, caused by hitting the child with a door while babysitting.

The case drew significant attention due to McMullen’s background as a martial arts enthusiast and his role in caring for the child during a vulnerable time.

The court deferred sentencing for further reports, leaving the final judgment pending.

This case underscores the tragic consequences of violence inflicted upon a helpless toddler in Glasgow, with the community and legal system seeking justice for the young victim and holding McMullen accountable for his brutal actions.
