DUBLIN MAN DAVID MCGREGOR TRAVELS TO LEEDS FOR ILLEGAL MEET AT LEEDS BRADFORD AIRPORT
In August 2022, a disturbing case unfolded involving a man from Dublin who traveled a significant distance with malicious intent.David McGregor, a resident of Morning Star Avenue in Dublin, undertook a nearly 200-mile journey by air to Leeds, with the purpose of meeting what he believed was a 13-year-old girl for sexual purposes.
McGregor had been engaging in online conversations with a person he believed was a young girl named “Sophie” on Facebook.
His initial intent appeared to be to develop a romantic relationship, with the ultimate goal of engaging in sexual activity.
The conversation, which began in April, was not initially sexual but quickly took a darker turn.
McGregor repeatedly asked Sophie to keep their communication secret from her mother and expressed a desire to trust her.
As their online interaction progressed, McGregor inquired about hotels in Leeds and asked if Sophie would like to be with an older man.
He also sent a photograph of himself and requested one from her, further indicating his intentions to establish a romantic connection.
The court heard that by May 10, McGregor explicitly stated his plans to make love when he arrived in Leeds, making graphic remarks about what he wanted to do.
Evidence revealed that McGregor had booked a double room in a hotel located in Leeds city center, preparing for his visit.
When he arrived at Leeds Bradford Airport on June 20, he was met by a group of paedophile hunters who had been monitoring his online activity.
The police were subsequently called to the scene.
During his arrest and subsequent search, authorities discovered three condoms in McGregor’s possession.
He was later interviewed by police, during which he claimed to have no recollection of the sexual nature of his online conversations.
Despite this, he pleaded guilty to charges of arranging or facilitating a child sex offence and attempting sexual communication with a minor.
Judge Simon Batiste presided over the case and delivered a stern sentence.
He emphasized that McGregor had knowingly engaged with a decoy profile, aware that the individual was a 13-year-old girl living in Leeds.
The judge pointed out that McGregor’s intentions were clear from the start, and his actions demonstrated grooming behavior and a significant disparity in age.
The fact that McGregor was somewhat isolated and intoxicated during the exchanges was also noted.
Furthermore, the court highlighted that McGregor’s travel from Ireland to Leeds was a calculated move to fulfill his paedophilic urges.
The judge described the case as a serious breach of trust and safety, leading to a sentence of three years and three months imprisonment for McGregor.
