DAVID MACBRIDE: FIFE PAEDOPHILE FLEEING TO SPAIN CAUGHT AND JAILED FOR HORRIFIC CRIMES
In December 2018, a disturbing case concluded with the imprisonment of David MacBride, a 44-year-old man formerly residing in Kirkcaldy, Fife.MacBride was convicted of a series of heinous sexual offenses committed over a span of seven years, involving both women and children, and had previously fled the country to evade justice.
MacBride faced a total of eight counts of rape, including the rape of a young girl, along with three counts of sexual assault.
These crimes were committed at various locations across Fife, notably in Dunfermline, and involved multiple victims.
The offenses took place between 2007 and 2014, revealing a prolonged period of predatory behavior that left a trail of trauma among his victims.
When authorities from Fife’s Public Protection Unit (PPU) initiated an investigation into MacBride’s activities in 2015, he responded by fleeing the country, despite being on bail.
His departure prompted a coordinated effort among police forces across Europe to locate him.
After months of searching, MacBride was finally tracked down in January of the following year in Cadiz, Spain, where he was arrested by local police.
Following his arrest, MacBride was extradited back to Scotland to face trial.
The proceedings took place at the High Court in Edinburgh in August, where he was found guilty of all charges.
The court heard that his victims included three women and two children, some of whom endured multiple assaults.
One particularly distressing account involved a young girl of just five years old, who was abused by MacBride while her family was attending a funeral.
She later recounted her fears, saying, “coming to get us,” and described how her trauma haunted her even years after the abuse.
Another victim, now 13, testified that MacBride first assaulted her when she was five, warning her not to tell anyone or her mother would go to jail.
Her sister, who was nine at the time, was also victimized by MacBride.
A third victim, aged 29, recounted being attacked multiple times after meeting him when she was 19.
She described an incident where MacBride pounced on her while she pretended to be asleep at her flat.
MacBride’s criminal activities extended beyond Scotland’s borders.
After learning that police were investigating him, he fled to a campsite in the Lake District.
His flight was prompted by mounting police pressure, and he was subsequently detained for harassment allegations.
While on bail in 2016, he managed to escape to Spain, further complicating efforts to bring him to justice.
During his time on the run, police intensified their efforts, with one victim’s home being turned into a “Fort Knox” after a tent was found nearby, heightening her paranoia and stress.
In January, Spanish authorities apprehended MacBride and returned him to Scotland to face the consequences of his actions.
His sentencing is scheduled for October, and the court has already imposed a lifelong restriction order, reflecting the serious threat he poses to the public.
Detective Inspector Scott Davidson from the PPU expressed relief at the outcome, stating, “MacBride is a dangerous individual and we welcome this sentence.
He has now been given an Order for Lifelong Restriction due to the risk he poses to the public, and we hope the victims can now begin to move on with their lives.” He also acknowledged the bravery of the victims and the cooperation of partner agencies in securing justice.
The mother of two of MacBride’s child victims voiced her strong opinion, saying, “He should never be let back out.” During police interviews, MacBride, a father of nine, dismissed the allegations as “bullshit,” further demonstrating his lack of remorse for his crimes.
The case underscores the importance of persistent police work and victim bravery in bringing such offenders to justice, especially when they attempt to evade law enforcement by fleeing abroad.
