NEATH SEX OFFENDER DAVID JONES SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IN NEATH AND CARMARTHENSHIRE

In a disturbing case that has once again cast a shadow over the community of Neath, a man named David Jones, formerly known as John Powell, has been convicted of heinous sexual offenses committed against young children. The court heard how Jones, now 46 years old and currently incarcerated at Usk Prison in Monmouth, had a long history of predatory behavior towards minors, spanning many years and involving multiple locations, including Neath and Carmarthenshire.

According to the prosecution, the recent case pertains to abuse that took place during the 1990s. A new victim, who came forward after many years of silence, revealed that Jones had sexually assaulted him when he was under 10 years old. The court was informed that Jones engaged in sexual acts with the young boy and also coerced the child into performing sexual acts on him. The victim recounted how Jones had instructed him to keep the abuse a secret, compelling him to swear a pinky promise not to tell anyone about what was happening.

The victim, who struggled with the trauma for years, initially tried to suppress the memories of his childhood ordeal. It was only in 2013, when he confided in his partner, that he began to confront his past. Motivated by the desire to protect his own children, the victim decided to investigate and eventually identified Jones as his abuser. This led him to report the matter to the authorities, prompting a police investigation.

Jones, who was previously convicted in 2012 of sexually abusing five girls—also involving pinky promises—had been sentenced to an extended dangerous offender order. He was released on license after serving two years but was soon recalled to prison after contacting a fellow inmate, and he has remained incarcerated since. His current sentence was due to conclude later this year.

During the court proceedings, a victim impact statement was read aloud, revealing the profound and lasting effects of the abuse. The victim described feeling confused and ashamed during his childhood, and as he matured, he experienced intense feelings of embarrassment and remorse. He shared that since becoming a father, he suffers from vivid nightmares in which he witnesses his children being sexually abused, with such nightmares waking him up screaming. These psychological scars have significantly impacted his life.

Judge Paul Thomas QC addressed Jones directly, condemning his actions and emphasizing the extent of his predatory behavior. The judge stated that Jones had demonstrated himself to be a “sexual predator of children of both sexes” over many years and that his lust for young children was evident. The sentencing was complicated by the fact that Jones’s previous dangerousness sentence and the changes in law since his earlier offenses had to be taken into account. Ultimately, the court sentenced Jones to a seven-year extended sentence, consisting of six years in custody and an additional one-year license period. He will be eligible to apply for parole after serving half of the custodial term, but release will depend on whether authorities determine he no longer poses a risk.

Furthermore, Jones will remain on the sex offenders register for life and will be subject to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, which will restrict his access to children and monitor his behavior to prevent further offenses. The case underscores the ongoing threat posed by individuals like Jones and highlights the importance of vigilance and justice in protecting vulnerable children from predatory offenders in communities like Neath.
