DERBYSHIRE PAEDOPHILE CAUGHT WITH POLICE POSING AS 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL

A convicted paedophile with a history of sexual offences traveled from his residence in Stoke-on-Trent with the intention of meeting a girl he believed to be 12 years old for sexual activity.

David Jones sent explicit and inappropriate messages via Skype and made arrangements to meet the girl in Derby.

However, upon arriving at Derby railway station, he was detained by police officers.

It was later revealed that the girl he intended to meet was an undercover police officer pretending to be a minor online.

Jones, who resides on Chartham Street, appeared via video link from HMP Nottingham at Derby Crown Court.

He admitted to planning to meet a minor for sexual purposes and violating his sexual harm prevention order (SHPO).

He had previously served a 12-month sentence and was subject to an SHPO after attempting to sexually assault a 15-year-old.

The court was informed that after being released from prison, Jones continued offending and breached his SHPO by failing to disclose that he owned a smartphone.

Defence lawyer David Morton stated: “Mr.

Jones is 55 years old.

He describes himself as feeling isolated and lonely.

He recently qualified as a forklift truck driver in October of last year.

He also expressed sincere remorse for his actions last November.” Judge Michelle Heeley QC remarked: “These are two serious crimes, and you are a registered sexual offender.” She sentenced Jones to three years in prison, imposed an indefinite SHPO, and ordered him to register as a sex offender for ten years.

The NSPCC emphasized the importance of new legislation to address online predator activity.

A spokesperson said: “This case highlights the disturbing ways predators exploit the internet to target vulnerable children.

The messages Jones was sending could have greatly harmed a young person, and online platforms make it too easy for offenders to pursue children in this way.” They called for the government to act swiftly to introduce laws that will hold social media companies accountable for protecting children and young people online.
