DAVID JONES SHOCKS GLASGOW WITH SEXUAL ASSAULTS AFTER HEROIC AWARD NIGHT
In a startling turn of events, David Jones, a police officer from Glasgow, was convicted of sexually assaulting four women during an incident that marred what was supposed to be a celebratory evening honoring his bravery.The incident took place in March 2023 at the Radisson Blu hotel in Glasgow, where Jones had been attending the Scottish First Aid awards ceremony.
Jones, aged 36, had been recognized earlier that evening for his courageous actions in Edinburgh, where he faced a potentially deadly situation involving a man wielding a knife.
His role in confronting the armed individual and assisting in evacuating the area had earned him and three colleagues the prestigious Chairperson’s Award.
The officers had responded swiftly to reports of a gas leak, providing first aid and ensuring the safety of those nearby.
Their efforts were lauded as heroic, and Jones’s contribution was celebrated at the event.
However, the mood of celebration was shattered when allegations of misconduct surfaced.
The trial revealed that after the ceremony, which included festivities with an ABBA tribute act and a DJ, Jones engaged in inappropriate and criminal behavior towards four women, all of whom were public servants being honored that night.
The victims included a firefighter, a swimming instructor, her sister, and a paramedic student, all of whom testified about Jones’s disturbing conduct.
The 23-year-old paramedic student recounted how Jones made multiple attempts to dance with her.
She described an incident where he tried to grab her breast and then placed his hand under her dress, actions that have left her suffering from PTSD since the event.
The firefighter, aged 30, reported feeling a “distinctive bump” on her back followed by a groping of her buttocks.
The swimming instructor, only 23, described an “uncomfortable interaction” where Jones groped her breast and refused to leave her alone despite her protests.
She explained that he remained near her group and later approached her sister, becoming more aggressive and making her feel intimidated and unsafe.
Security personnel eventually ejected Jones from the venue due to his intoxication and inappropriate behavior.
During the trial, Jones admitted to possibly making physical contact but claimed he would have ceased his advances if the women had rejected him.
He expressed confusion over why he was removed from the event, suggesting that any apologies he offered might have been misunderstood.
His lawyer, Christopher Shaw, defended him, asserting that Jones maintains his innocence and is a man of good character, though acknowledging that his employment as a police officer is now over.
Police Scotland’s head of professional standards, Ch Supt Helen Harrison, emphasized the importance of maintaining public trust in law enforcement.
She stated that misconduct by officers damages the reputation of the police force and assured that Jones remains suspended and will face formal misconduct proceedings.
Despite the serious allegations, Jones was found not guilty of three additional sexual assault charges.
In sentencing, Sheriff Andrew McIntyre ordered Jones to complete 150 hours of unpaid community service, placed him under supervision, and mandated registration on the sex offenders’ register for one year.
