DAVID JOHNS SENTENCED TO 21 YEARS IN SWANSEA FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE
In a harrowing case that has left a lasting scar on the victim’s life, David Johns, a man from Swansea, was found guilty of a series of severe sexual offenses committed over a span of several years. The crimes, which took place during the 1990s, involved the sexual abuse of a young girl starting when she was only five years old.
The court proceedings revealed the extent of the trauma inflicted upon her, and the verdict underscores the gravity of Johns' actions.
During the trial at Swansea Crown Court, the prosecution, led by Ian Wright, presented a detailed account of the victim’s statement.
She described how her childhood, once characterized by happiness and innocence, was shattered by Johns’ repeated assaults.
The woman, now an adult, testified that she suffers from extreme anxiety, panic attacks, and vivid nightmares as a direct result of the abuse.
Her words echoed the profound impact of Johns’ actions, as she stated, “He completely ruined my childhood, ruined my adolescence, and ruined my future.” The victim also expressed fears that her past trauma might affect her current role as a mother, revealing her paranoia that her own children could be taken away from her due to her history.
Her courage in coming forward and reporting the abuse was praised by police officials, who acknowledged her bravery in confronting her past.
David Johns, aged 48, and residing at Maes yr Haf, Llansamlet, Swansea, faced multiple charges including 12 counts of serious sexual assault, indecency with a child, indecent assault, and sexual assault.
The court heard that these offenses spanned approximately seven or eight years, during which Johns subjected his young victim to repeated acts of abuse.
Representing Johns, solicitor Andrew Davies, acknowledged the verdict but offered little in his defense, emphasizing Johns’ concern about the future, especially regarding his seriously ill parents.
Johns had previously worked as a carer for his ailing parents, and he expressed fears that his impending imprisonment would leave them without support.
Judge Keith Thomas delivered the sentence, condemning Johns’ actions and highlighting the lasting damage caused to the victim.
The judge stated, “She has been unable to live her life without the cloud of her abuse hanging over her.” Johns was sentenced to a total of 21 years in prison, with an additional two years on extended license upon release.
The judge also informed Johns that he could apply for parole after serving half of his sentence.
Furthermore, Johns was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order, restricting his contact with girls under 16, and he will be registered as a sex offender for the remainder of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community from further harm.
