These gestures were part of a broader pattern of grooming, which included sending her various gifts such as cards, letters, mini-discs, and even a paperback by Marquis de Sade, a notorious figure associated with sexual libertinism and criminality.
The girl, who was still a minor at the time, described how Howard would meet her outside of school hours and spend long periods speaking with her on the phone, further establishing a manipulative relationship.
Howard, who was single and 24 at the time of the incidents, was known to the girl as a popular and 'cool' teacher.
The court was told that he would joke about their secret meetings, joking that they could get caught by the cleaner when they met in a cupboard at the end of the school day.
The girl recounted that she performed a sexual act on him in a cupboard located at the end of a corridor on the top floor of the school.
She also revealed that her mother once questioned the numerous phone calls she received from Howard, noting the large phone bill, indicating the extent of their communication.
In addition to their school interactions, the girl visited Howard’s flat on one occasion, although there was no evidence of sexual activity occurring there.
The girl later reported Howard to the deputy headmaster and another teacher, but no action was taken at the time.
It was only in 2021 that she formally reported the abuse, providing a video-recorded statement to police on August 27 of that year.
She explained that she first received the Valentine’s Day card when she was sixteen, which was sent to her family home, followed by the handwritten letter in which Howard expressed his feelings of being 'besotted' with her.
The victim, now 38, described how she was groomed and abused over a long period, which led to severe psychological trauma.
She recounted feelings of anxiety, agoraphobia, and social isolation, as well as nightmares involving Howard.
She admitted to self-harming by pouring boiling water on her wrists and moving to a home near a railway level crossing with the intent of ending her life.
Her statement highlighted the profound and lasting impact of Howard’s actions, emphasizing that others in the school, including the deputy head, were aware of their relationship but failed to intervene.
Prosecutor Matthew Dalton detailed that Howard, who later left teaching to pursue a career in law, had flirted with the girl in class and was perceived as a charismatic figure among students.
The girl admitted to having a crush on him and lying to her parents about her whereabouts when she was with Howard.
She also expressed regret that her teachers did not act sooner to stop the abuse, which she described as a powerful grooming process that convinced her for years that their relationship was consensual.
During the hearing, Howard’s lawyer, James Martin, argued that his client was remorseful and had begun counseling only after his arrest.
The lawyer emphasized that Howard was a different person now, married with a child, and that his first teaching job was marked by immaturity.
He maintained that Howard did not groom the girl and that the incident in the cupboard was a one-off event that occurred before her exams.
The lawyer also noted that Howard had expressed remorse through a letter to the victim, which was available to the authorities.
Judge Charlotte Welsh acknowledged Howard’s remorse but condemned his actions as highly selfish and morally wrong.
