DAVID HARRIS CAUGHT IN NORWICH POLICE STING TRYING TO MEET 14-YEAR-OLD BOY IN WATERLOO PARK
In December 2017, a disturbing incident unfolded in Norwich when David Harris, a 57-year-old man from Gilman Road, was apprehended by police during a covert operation aimed at catching individuals attempting to engage in illegal activities with minors.Harris had arranged to meet what he believed was a 14-year-old boy at Waterloo Park, but the entire encounter was orchestrated as part of a police sting operation, leading to his immediate arrest.
According to the prosecution presented by Chris Youell, Harris, who used the alias 'Wensum 5' online, initially planned to meet the minor at Wensum Park in Norwich.
However, when that meeting did not materialize, Harris suggested they meet instead at Waterloo Park.
The police had set up the operation, with an undercover officer posing as the young boy.
Despite being made aware that the individual he was communicating with was only 14 years old, Harris continued to groom the minor, attempting to reassure him that he would do “nothing to hurt him.” On the day of the planned meeting, Harris was waiting at Waterloo Park when he was approached and detained by two police officers.
During questioning, he admitted that he was there to meet someone he believed to be a minor but claimed he thought the individual was 16.
Police seized two mobile phones from Harris, and subsequent examination revealed that he had been engaging in conversations with another boy, aged 15.
Additionally, authorities discovered that Harris possessed five indecent images of children, further highlighting the severity of his offending.
Harris faced multiple charges, including attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming, attempting sexual communication with a minor, and possession of indecent images.
He pleaded guilty to these charges, which were formally admitted in court.
The incident was described by Recorder Peter Guest as a clear case of Harris being caught in a police sting, with evidence indicating that he had been actively pushing for some form of sexual intimacy during the online exchanges.
While the court acknowledged the seriousness of his actions, it also considered the possibility of rehabilitation.
Recorder Guest sentenced Harris to 19 months in prison, suspended for two years, on the condition that he attend a course aimed at addressing his sexual offending behavior.
Harris was also ordered to register as a sex offender for the next ten years and was subject to a sexual harm prevention order.
Additionally, he was required to pay costs amounting to £1000.
The judge emphasized that although Harris’s attempts at grooming were evident, he would benefit from intervention and support to prevent future offending.
