David Duro

Duffield Moira Bayston Hill Sexual Abuser

June 2009 Child work ban for phone voyeurism A SWIMMING teacher from Moira has been disqualified from working with children for life after being convicted of voyeurism. David Duro, 38, of Harvest Grove, formerly of Glebe Road, Bayston Hill used his mobile phone to film about 10 female pupils getting changed at Ecclesbourne School’s swimming pool, in Duffield, near Derby, where he worked as a swimming coach. He also used a web camera or webcam to film his students getting changed while working as a swimming instructor in Shropshire.  Duro pleaded guilty to four charges of voyeurism between June 1, 2006, and March 15, 2008, after appearing at Shrewsbury Crown Court on June 2, and has now been sentenced to a three-year supervision order and community order. The 38-year-old filmed swimming students in the changing rooms and also used the webcam to film visitors at his home as they got changed in his spare room. However, a statement released by Ecclesbourne School assured parents that while Duro was employed as a coach between 2003 and 2006 he had not been filming the school’s pupils, but students who were engaged in private lessons he had set up outside of school. It said: “Mr Duro was employed as a swimming manager at the Ecclesbourne School between May, 2003, and March, 2006. Prior to his appointment, Mr Duro was subject to the checks applicable to those working with children. “During the time Mr Duro worked for The Ecclesbourne School, he also hired school facilities to run The DJ Swim School. The swim school was run as a separate business entity. “The conviction appears to relate to the conduct of Mr Duro whilst engaged in the private lessons he offered outside of school hours with older swimmers. There is no suggestion that any of the students at the Ecclesbourne School have been put at risk, or were filmed either with or without their consent.” During the hearing at Shrewsbury Crown Court, the court was told how Duro used a webcam to film one of his students performing sexual acts while he worked at a leisure centre in Shrewsbury. The court was told that that images and videos made by Duro were found by police who were searching his home in connection with a separate allegation. A check on his mobile phone found he had filmed about 10 female pupils from Ecclesbourne leisure centre getting changed. As well as being disqualified from working with children indefinitely, Duro will have to attend a community sex offenders’ programme, pay £192 costs and has been made the subject of a notifications requirement under the Sexual Offences Act for five years.
