DAVID CREED SENTENCED IN CANTERBURY FOR MANSLAUGHTER OF PARTNER CATHERINE GRANGER

In a tragic case that has shocked the community of Canterbury, 53-year-old David Creed was handed a lengthy prison sentence after admitting to the manslaughter of his partner, Catherine Granger. The incident took place inside their shared residence, where Creed carried out a violent attack that ultimately led to her death.

According to court reports, Creed used a carving knife to assault Ms. Granger, inflicting multiple stab wounds to her back and a single wound to her front. Despite the swift response of emergency services, who arrived promptly and administered urgent first aid, Ms. Granger was declared dead at the scene. The details of the attack reveal a brutal and relentless assault that left her with devastating injuries.

On December 29, 2020, Creed contacted emergency services by calling 999, during which he confessed to repeatedly stabbing Ms. Granger. Initially, he faced charges of murder; however, he later pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. This plea was accepted by the prosecution, who acknowledged Creed’s severe alcohol dependency as a significant factor influencing his mental state at the time of the attack.

The court heard that both Creed and Ms. Granger had been drinking vodka over several days leading up to the incident, and their relationship had been marked by ongoing arguments. The alcohol consumption and the tense atmosphere appeared to have played a role in escalating the violence that culminated in the fatal stabbing.

Following the sentencing, Detective Sergeant Ash Bowles commented on the case, stating, "This is a tragic case in which a woman has lost her life after being subjected to a brutal attack by her own partner, who will now spend a significant amount of time behind bars for the terrible crime he committed."

As part of his sentence, Creed was sentenced to 16 years in prison. Additionally, upon his eventual release, he will be subject to a further four years on licence, ensuring close supervision and restrictions to prevent any further harm.
