LONDON MAN JAILED FOR MANSLAUGHTER OF ROOMMATE WITH SCISSORS
A man named David Cheres, aged 21, was sentenced for the manslaughter of his 43-year-old roommate Tiparat Argatu in Tower Hamlets.Cheres launched a brutal attack on Tiparat with a kitchen knife and a pair of scissors in her room around 2 pm on January 24, 2021.
During the assault, Cheres stamped on her neck and face, bit her arm, and stabbed and slashed her so forcefully that he bent the scissors in half.
Despite efforts by police and ambulance services, Tiparat could not be saved.
Cheres had pleaded guilty to manslaughter on August 26 last year, but his plea was rejected, leading to a two-month trial from October 31, 2022.
He was found not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter and was subsequently sentenced to a hospital order under Section 37 of the Mental Health Act.
CCTV footage showed Cheres walking naked along Cable Street early on January 25, where he discarded his bloody clothes.
He was assessed by medical professionals and found fit to stand trial, which resulted in his conviction.
Tiparat's sister, Virongrong Witpiboolrat, expressed deep sadness, describing her as a kind person who loved her family and was severely abused, with no chance to say goodbye.
Detective Sergeant Jugdeep Atwal from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command described the killing as senseless and as a violent act stemming from Cheres losing his temper, emphasizing the importance of addressing violence against women and girls.
