DAVID CHENELER JAILED IN LONDON FOR BREACHING SEX OFFENCE ORDER AND POSSESSING KNIFE
A 73-year-old man named David Cheneler has been sentenced to two years in prison after being caught in a situation that raised serious concerns about child safety and legal violations in London.The incident occurred on January 10th in Denmark Hill, located in south-east London, when police utilizing Live Facial Recognition (LFR) technology identified Cheneler in the company of a young girl aged six.
Authorities confirmed that Cheneler was in breach of his Sexual Offence Prevention Order (SOPO), a legal restriction that explicitly forbids him from being alone with any child under the age of 14.
The police investigation revealed that he was found with the young girl during a routine LFR operation, which is designed to enhance public safety by quickly identifying individuals with known criminal backgrounds or restrictions.
In addition to violating his SOPO, Cheneler was found to be in possession of a lock-knife, a serious offense that further complicated his legal situation.
Cheneler, who resides in Lewisham, had previously been subjected to a SOPO in 2019 following a conviction for 21 child abuse offenses, which resulted in a nine-year prison sentence.
Although there were no allegations of abuse made during this recent incident, Detective Constable Adam Pearce emphasized the potential danger posed by Cheneler.
He stated, "Although there were no allegations made towards David Cheneler on this occasion, it's possible if he hadn't been identified using this technology, he could have gone on to abuse this child." Further details revealed that Cheneler had developed a relationship with the child and her mother over the course of a year.
He was involved in picking the girl up from school as a favor to her mother, an act that the Metropolitan Police highlighted as a clear breach of his legal conditions.
The police also noted that this behavior was a violation of the restrictions imposed by his SOPO, which was designed to prevent such interactions.
Leading the Metropolitan Police's efforts with LFR technology, Lindsey Chiswick underscored the importance of this tool in preventing potential harm.
She remarked, "Without this technology, Cheneler may have had the opportunity to cause further harm." Detective Constable Pearce added that Cheneler's ex-wife was unaware of his criminal history and that both she and her young daughter had been exploited by him, highlighting the betrayal of trust involved.
The police's intervention and the use of advanced surveillance technology played a crucial role in preventing what could have been a tragic outcome, reinforcing the importance of such measures in safeguarding vulnerable individuals in London.
