DAVID CARSLEY AND HIS SHOCKING CRIMES IN LANCASTHIRE

A man with a disturbing past, David Carsley, used deception and false identities to infiltrate the lives of a vulnerable woman and her young children in Lancashire.

Despite his previous convictions for child sex offences, Carsley went to great lengths to conceal his background, presenting a fabricated identity during his interactions.

Carsley’s criminal history dates back to the 1980s when he committed indecent assault and gross indecency.

His crimes against children under the age of 14 led to his imprisonment in 1995 for a term of three years.

Following his incarceration, he was subjected to lifelong notification requirements, which mandated that he could not spend more than 12 hours at any residence with individuals under 18 without notifying authorities.

Nonetheless, during this period, Carsley managed to stay at the home of a woman unaware of his criminal past, often under false pretenses.

In an effort to hide his identity and past, Carsley adopted the alias David Kay when he met the vulnerable woman.

The court heard that this was a deliberate tactic to conceal his true identity.

The woman, described as vulnerable, was reportedly unaware of Carsley's history, making his deception particularly malicious.

The situation drew police attention when they received information indicating that Carsley had been residing at an address in Chorley, which was different from his known residence on Bolton Street.

Law enforcement officers initially faced difficulties in establishing contact with the woman, who eventually revealed that she knew him as David Kay.

Following this revelation, police attempted to make contact by phone.

Although Carsley refused to cooperate during the police interview, authorities were able to locate him through tracking his phone call.

His arrest was subsequently carried out based on this evidence.

During the investigation, it was confirmed by one of the children living at the residence that Carsley had been staying there.

The court filings revealed that he also assisted with nighttime routines and preparing the children for school, further establishing his inappropriate involvement with the family.

Throughout the proceedings, Carsley's defense attorney, Ellen Shaw, argued that her client deserved credit for a guilty plea and suggested that his concealment of identity was driven by feelings of ostracism due to his criminal history.

She described his decision to hide his past as a difficult conversation for him and proposed that a suspended sentence coupled with rehabilitation efforts might yield more beneficial results.

However, the presiding judge, Judge Simon Medland KC, strongly disagreed with this perspective.

He emphasized the seriousness of the offence, noting that Carsley had deliberately lived with a vulnerable woman and her children under a false identity for approximately a month.

The judge stated that Carsley's actions posed a significant risk to the children, as he concealed his true identity and failed to inform the mother of his criminal background, which she should have been made aware of.

In light of these facts, Judge Medland sentenced Carsley to 18 months in prison, underscoring the gravity of his deceit and the potential danger he posed by exploiting the trust of the vulnerable family in Lancashire.
