DAVID CANDLISH'S COVENTRY CHILD SEX OFFENCES: A LONG HISTORY OF ABUSE IN LEAMINGTON

In March 2021, a man named David Candlish, who has a troubling history of sexual offenses against children spanning over five decades, was sentenced to a substantial prison term for his heinous crimes committed during his time at a football club in Leamington.

Candlish, aged 74 and residing in Spon End, Coventry, pleaded guilty at Warwick Crown Court to five counts of indecent assault on a young boy, marking a significant development in a case that uncovered decades of predatory behavior.

Prosecutor Stefan Kolodynski detailed how Candlish, a senior player at the Leamington football club during the 1970s, exploited his position of trust to abuse a young boy.

The club, which operated both adult and junior teams, was unaware of Candlish’s prior conviction for indecent assault on a male, which dated back to 1972.

Despite this, Candlish was entrusted with responsibilities such as driving an 11-year-old boy home from training sessions and matches.

The abuse began after a football game when Candlish stopped his vehicle outside Leamington.

Claiming there was a problem with the car, he leaned over and indecently touched the boy’s groin.

This disturbing pattern of misconduct continued on at least five other occasions, during which Candlish engaged in manipulative tactics, including threats to inform the boy’s father if he did not comply with his demands.

The most severe incident occurred when the boy was 12 years old.

After a match, they went to a house in an isolated part of a garden, where Candlish, who was still in his football kit, forcibly pulled the boy onto the ground.

He then pulled down the boy’s shorts, made him touch him, and engaged in acts of simulated intercourse, which the victim described as a traumatic experience that haunted him for life.

This particular assault was characterized by its cruelty and the calculated manner in which Candlish manipulated the young victim.

The final recorded incident took place during a fishing trip, where Candlish again pulled the boy’s shorts down and touched him.

The situation was interrupted when the boy’s father, who had become suspicious, warned Candlish to stay away from his son.

Despite this warning, the incident was not reported at the time, allowing Candlish to continue his pattern of abuse for years.

Years later, the victim, who had struggled with the trauma for many years, decided to come forward and report the abuse to the police.

He expressed a sense of relief and empowerment, stating, “I am now in the best place in my life,” after finally confronting his past.

When questioned at the time of his arrest, Candlish dismissed the allegations as “pure fantasy,” claiming that his victim was attempting to seek compensation.

He also claimed that the accusations were “99 per cent lies,” although he did admit to touching the boy during the fishing trip.

It was revealed that Candlish had a prior conviction for indecent assault on two boys in 1999, which resulted in an eight-year prison sentence.

Additionally, in 2019, he served 14 months for sexual assault on a boy under 14.

Despite these previous convictions and sentences, Candlish continued to offend, demonstrating a troubling pattern of behavior.

During the sentencing hearing, Sarah Allen, defending Candlish, acknowledged that he had a long-standing problem and expressed that he was remorseful for his actions.

She suggested that a community order might help in preventing future offenses by allowing him to continue working with support.

However, Judge Peter Cooke firmly rejected this proposal, emphasizing the severity and persistence of Candlish’s offending.

The judge highlighted that Candlish’s repeated abuse was part of a cynical and compulsive pattern, often carried out in secret but sometimes brazenly, with manipulative threats used to control his victims.

Judge Cooke concluded that the nature of Candlish’s crimes warranted a significant period of immediate imprisonment.

He underscored that the abuse was not only clandestine but also marked by a disturbing level of boldness and cruelty, with Candlish’s threats to tell the boy’s father serving as a particularly malicious form of psychological manipulation.

The court’s decision reflects the gravity of Candlish’s offenses and the need to protect the community from further harm.
