DAVID BLEWETT PENSANCE PAEDOPHILE SENTENCED FOR 1990S CHILD ABUSE IN TRURO
In a serious case that has shocked the community of Penzance, a man named David Blewett has been convicted and sentenced for heinous acts of sexual abuse committed against a young girl during the early 1990s. The case was brought before Truro Crown Court, where the court proceedings revealed disturbing details about the abuse that took place in the Penzance area.Blewett, now aged 68 and residing at Chyandour Coombe, faced multiple charges related to his misconduct. He was accused of five counts of indecent assault against a girl who, for legal reasons, cannot be identified. The incidents allegedly occurred between 1991 and 1993, when the victim was a minor. Despite maintaining his innocence, Blewett was found guilty on all counts by a jury last Monday.
During the trial, the prosecution, led by Mary McCarthy, outlined the nature of the abuse, emphasizing that Blewett had inappropriately touched the girl on numerous occasions within the Penzance vicinity. Ms. McCarthy recounted that Blewett would make disturbing remarks such as, “You’re enjoying it really,” during these encounters, which added to the severity of the allegations.
The victim, who has since grown into an adult, initially contacted the police in 2013 to report the abuse. It was also revealed that she had confided in close friends about her experiences during her childhood, indicating the long-lasting impact of the trauma. During police interviews, Blewett denied any involvement, claiming that the allegations were false and unsubstantiated.
Following the jury’s guilty verdicts, defense attorney David Evans stated that Blewett continued to deny the charges and insisted that the abuse had never escalated beyond inappropriate touching. Evans described Blewett as a hardworking and law-abiding man throughout his life, aside from these allegations.
In sentencing, Mr. Justice Blake acknowledged the profound and devastating effect the abuse had on the victim’s life. The judge described one of the incidents as “particularly repulsive and iniquitous,” underscoring the gravity of Blewett’s actions. As part of his punishment, Blewett was sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to register as a sex offender, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct.
Earlier, in July 2014, Blewett had appeared at Truro Crown Court to face additional allegations. He pleaded not guilty to five counts of indecent assault on a different girl, who was under 14 at the time, between 1991 and 1993. He also denied two charges of sexual activity with a second child, which allegedly occurred between 2007 and 2012. The case was adjourned to March 2 for a full trial, indicating ongoing legal proceedings related to these serious accusations.
